Re: Glass rod puzzle

Thanks for the responses .....interesting . It would seem that its common to do it both ways, each has a valid reason . I asked my Chem teacher what he does . He said he gets the juniors to use the rubber/plastic end in solution to save wear on the beakers but says the seniors use that end as a hand...

Re: Glass rod puzzle

Here's my Puzzling question about the strirring rod. At a recent PL day while stirring a solution with a glass stirring rod I mentioned how the noise of the Yr12 Chem class had almost driven me batty last week .......tinkle ,tinkle, tinkle...... Then a couple of Labbies looked at me puzzled ...

Re: Spring Balances

OK they arrived . Pretty happy with them . They were all "Zeroe'd" on arrival . I checked all the 1N ones with a 100gm mass and they all weighed 100gm except for one that was 0.5gm out .....I'm pretty happy with that . Haines Spring Balances.jpg Here's a side by side with the older ...

Re: Dropper bottle teats

I'm not sure if even these ones are still available, might need to get onto MTA who have bought Serrata to see if they can help us out. If we can use the black ones on a lot of solutions, it will keep us out of trouble for a few years. The old Serrata link now brings you to MTA ....seems like they ...

Re: LEAD NITRATE

I totally get that its wrong and out of date but, my question was how have DET schools been labelling their Lead nitrate in the last 21 years ?

How have DET Labbies interpreted the CSIS info on it and used it to label their Lead Nitrate solutions ?

Re: LEAD NITRATE

OK I'm confused . Was at a PL day last week and I spotted 0.1M lead nitrate Droppers in the prep room of the school we were at . They had a green Detra sticker . I commented that it was wrong and that it should be Orange . So we looked it up in CSIS .....(yes I know CSIS is out of date but that is w...

Re: Dropper bottle teats

I don't have any dropper bottles anymore all in stull bottles no more contamination, less spills and very little deterioration. Silver nitrate bottles are covered in foil been using like that for 8-9 years now not a problem. Iodine in amber regent bottles kid use disposable droppers. Macca , how do...

Re: Spring Balances

Great idea, Labbie! Might not be necessary with this new design, the markings are printed on the inside of the tubing, doesn't look like they can be worn away by the sliding marker. Sure is a great idea Labby . I might try to save the existing ones this way . Thanks for the info Prima , that sounds...

Re: Dropper bottle teats

Update on the Silicone rubber teats . They hate Acid #-o After 7 months on HCl 1M and they are disintegrating . Ones on NHO3 1M no better . Silicone teats.jpg Hates Acid.jpg However they seem to be fairing OK with Alcohol based indicators such as Phenolthalien and universal Indicator which the Red R...

Thanks Prima . They look nice . biggest issue I had with the old tubular ones was the markings wearing off . how well do they appear printed or etched on the Haines ones ?

Spring Balances

Hi all about to purchase some new spring balances . Quite a few of the older ones have the numbers so badly worn off them that they are now useless. several of the yellow ones have had the spring come detached and I am sick of trying to fix them . They are available from the usual suppliers but when...

Re: propylene glycol

To be honest , I think its an error in CSIS .Propylene glycol is FDA approved and is used in food such as Ice-cream Ethylene Glycol is however very toxic and is used as an anti-freeze in car radiators ....but despite all its hazards , its listed in CCSC as 7-12 I think they got their Glycols mixed u...

Oil for separation and rusting pracs

Hi Labbies , Just wondering what oil you all use ? For a separation Prac we were using Kerosene and water in a separating funnel . It was relatively easy to clean out but some teachers complained about the smell . So we tried vege oil and also Paraffin oil mixed with some water and food dye . This w...
