Re: amylase/diastase
Amylase and diastase are the same thing. Be careful though as some of them are almost all filler. The Chemsupply one that we have says it contains extender but we found out it was actually 95% potassium sulphate. Some people had said that they weren't getting very good results with it. So when we we...

Re: Lab. Tech. status update
Yes that's right. I worked it out as number of timetabled science lessons a week multiplied by 47.5 mins (that is the average length of a lesson here, i just counted 2 lessons for any doubles) divided by 60 to get the number of science teaching hours. Then divided the number of hours I work by the n...

Re: Lab. Tech. status update
Hi everyone
Is there anymore news on this. I am trying to get ammunition to increase my hours. I currently work out at around 0.3 (depending whether you include the year 6 & 7's or not). Is this just a draft or is it more than that? Where can i find a proper copy of it?

Re: Eye Dissection
We usually give the students scissors and the teacher goes round with a scalpel at the beginning and makes a small slit in the eye to start them off.

Re: Advancing up Levels
I too really struggle with Physics. Pretty much ok with the chem as that is my degree (although haven't used it much since I graduated so have to work hard to get the cogs turning again!) and ok with the biol as did A level and have worked in hospital labs and food labs and was more on the biol side...

Re: Advancing up Levels
I find things a bit easier now I have been doing the job 4 years, maybe by the time I get to 6 I'll be bored! But when I first started I hadn't used my brain so much in years. You are expected to know about such a wide range of things, be able to come up with ideas and prepare things with a few hour...

This is an experiment I got from somewhere but I have never actually done it. It does involve enzymes as well as HCl though.
Good luck.

Re: venting of cabinets/chemical storage in hot weather
I got told yesterday that all of our chemical cabinets (acid, base and flammables) are going to get vented! :clap3: So after years of having to kick the door of the acid one open with my foot while holding my nose :yuck: , I'll be able to open it normally. The rest of the store won't be vented but t...

Re: Term time only labbies - change of hols in QLD
Here they do often organise a separate PD for school officers that I am expected to go to but it is never very relevant to me. I would much rather do my own thing and get ready for the term ahead. We just had a letter from our principal giving a bit more info for this year. They basically left it a ...

Re: forensic crime scene
We used to get CSIRO to come out and do a session on a cattle rustling case. It was very good but not sure if all states run the same thing. We weren't going to do it this year as Forensics isn't in the new curriculum.

Term time only labbies - change of hols in QLD
The Easter holidays here in QLD are different this year as they are 2 weeks long. They have done this by moving the pupil free days through the year into the holidays so the kids get the time off but not the teachers. Some schools are moving those PD days around to suit themselves e.g. Twilight sess...

Oh, does it mean urgent? I thought it meant someone had reported it as that what the "report this post" thing looks like. Sorry, makes sense now.

Re: Holding Sodium in their hands:(:(
We were wondering some of the same things. I can offer explanations for a couple but not all. Dry Ice can be a bit of a delayed pain. By the time it really started to hurt they would have done a lot of damage. I have had the situation where a teacher has put in a proper request and risk assessment b...

Search for student thermometers. I found some on Education Matters but other places probably do them. The thermometers themselves are glass I think, but they come in a plastic holder. Only a couple of dollars each.

Banning it would be like banning Bunsen's in case some fool of a teacher has a competition to see who can hold their hands in the flame for the longest!

Just check that things aren't hazardous even if you can buy them from the supermarket. One of my bright red "extreme" risk MSDS's is for toilet cleaner from Woolies.

Go into Manifest (at top of screen) then on the left hand side click on the stores you want to look at or just click on manifest if you are doing the whole thing. Once all the chemicals appear find the button on the right hand side “report generator†(looks like a spreadsheet). Clicking ...

Re: SDS + Chemwatch
As far as I am concerned Merilyn is spot on about the online manifest of MSDS's. It is not accessible in an emergency and you need to have a full paper copy somewhere on site. We have ours in the main office and folders of mini's in the prep rooms. I check mine at the end of the year (just because i...
