Re: cleaning bunsens
Thank you so much everyone. I've only just found time to think about bunsens again and get back on to chemtalk to check for answers! I am going to try to find one of these tip cleaner sets. Sounds like just the thing! BOC says they are $8 each and they only have one size of wire on them. I'll go and...

grams vs lugol iodine
Hi! talking about iodine solution, I have recipies for gram's iodine and lugol iodine. Lugol is a lot more concentrated (4g iodine, 6 g potassium iodide and 100 ml distilled water). Grams iodine is 1g iodine, 2g potsassium iodide and 300 ml distilled water. I usually make up grams iodine. I dont dil...

cleaning bunsens
Hi I know there have been previous posts on cleaning bunsens. I have read on there to melt wax clogging the top of the bunsen above the flame of another bunsen. I have done this and it worked well. But what about the little pinhole in the bottom of the bunsen? I cant force a pin down there because t...

Re: Rinse aid for glassware??
My husband works in a lab where they do work with micronutrients and all glassware has to be scrupulously clean. They soak in dilute HCL, then rinse in distilled water 4 times, then soak in 'decon' (a strong base), then rinse in distilled water 4 times again! I dont suggest that! At this level in hi...

light bulbs for unusual microscope
Hi I thought I submitted a question on the board about 20 min ago but cant see it there so at the risk of repeating myself, I will try again. I am wondering if anyone can help me find a light bulb, bayonet style, chiyoda 250v/25w, that is long and skinny. Glass part is about 45 x 20 mm and the metal...

Re: Chemistry RA's
Dear Sassi We have a form very similar to that one. It seems to work well. I am also now filing these in my folders (one for each year), along with tips on which setups worked/didn't work and any ideas (often from this site) on what we could try differently next year. I include photos or diagrams of...

Re: Galvanic Cell exp
Very funny! 25th hour of the day! Just think what you could get done in the 26th and 27th hours as well!! Another question about galvanic cells (and lemon batteries). I can get voltage readings but not current. My teacher wants a galvanic cell to run a light bulb to show changes from chemical to ele...

Re: Casual lab assistant needed !
good on you for going! You need to make a stand for important things like that. I am sure you will find someone to fill in for you. I found someone x 2, last year when I needed them. Two very wonderful, experienced retired lab assistants who knew what they were doing. Teachers were happy, I was happ...

Thanks Helen, Liz and Sue I will try these recipies too. I am having fun becoming an 'expert' on slime (read "playing"). Its all part of my professional development! Do you think I should test what happens when you throw it on the ceiling? OR there must be some really good practical joke w...

Thanks so much Richard!! I have printed out all the ideas now and will file them away. I didn't have time to get back to the computer today to check for replies but 2 more classes are doing it on Monday so I will test out some more recipies before then. We ended up doing 25 ml pva + 25 ml water + ~8...

slime
What's the best recipie for making slime. We have one that I will get ready for period 5 today that involves borax and pva glue. It's ok but often difficult to get to set properly, and not as satisfying as I think it could be. There is probably a previous thread on this. If so, can someone point me ...

Re: INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD
try a google search on interactive whiteboard/s and science. There are some great websites and lesson plans available which are designed specifically with the Int. W.B. in mind. You can get more specific in your searches if you are interested in a specific topic. You can also pull in animations from...

While we are on the topic of magnets, is it true that you need to be careful which direction to store bar magnets in (i.e not with two north ends near each other in the tray)

Re: yr metals conductivity
Hi We use bars of 2 different metals and glass, clamped to a retort stand. The ends of all three sit above a bunsen. I light a candle and drip candle wax at regular spacing along the rods, then stand a match in each drip. Then we light the bunsen and time how long it takes the matches on the differe...

Hi Sassi
I'm curious now - how do you make icecream and fired eggs using liquid N? We have tried the others but something different would add a little spice to life!
Thanks
Tina
