Re: SDS
Hi Kate, In that instance, I would use the ChemWatch "Gold SDS" The manufacturer's SDS is what is stipulated, but a good "wrong" SDS has got to be better than NO SDS. I'm sure that ANY sensible magistrate would concede that in court, if the "proper" one was not availabl...

Re: Disposal of Sodium Thiosulfate?
Thanks all. Yes it was the Hypo Cross reaction, (with the HCl). The Na2S2O3 was only 0.2M, and probably mostly used up in the reaction. The Science Assist solution seems to be to filter out the precipitated sulfur and bin it, then tip the filtrate down the sink. I will give that a go. Thanks for all...

Disposal of Sodium Thiosulfate?
Dear "Brains Trust" In the old (now extinct) CIS Appendix D, the recommended disposal for Sodium Thiosulfate was "down the sink (to the sewer). The new SDS sheet tells me that Sodium Thiosulfate is "Very toxic to aquatic organisms" and to "avoid release to the environme...

Re: Turn around time for Equipment orders?
I started this thread, and to my knowledge I have never received an email to say there was a reply! Sorry if you feel like I have been ignoring you! I have just now, discovered that there have been 12 posts! My order was just standard stuff. Beakers, test tube pegs, Stull caps, rare earth magnets,co...

Re: Life span of Sodium Hydroxide
What are you using it for? I would make up fresh solutions for senior titrations, etc, but for juniors to play with, I keep it until it is all used up! (I have a stack of 250mL reagent bottles) After a year or so, it might precipitate out "gunk" and turn the inside of the reagent bottle tr...

Turn around time for Equipment orders?
I had an order delivered today, from Haines Educational..I had placed the order on 6th November LAST YEAR! (it is now 15th March) That is OVER FOUR MONTHS from order to delivery. Is that a normal turn around time for Haines? I think my last order from Serrata was filled quicker than that. Cheers Ian

Saturated Sucrose solution? Is that "Stick jaw" toffee or "Brittle" toffee? Sounds yummy either way!melsid wrote:My lot order a saturated sucrose solution, but I've been giving them around 5 - 10% or so and it works just fine.

Re: Osmosis and diffusion
Hi All We did the iodine and starch solution for this prac without measuring side of things. The teacher also asked for sucrose and glucose both 1M. Has anyone used these as well for diffusion prac? Seems a strong concentration....1M sucrose is 34.23%. Thanks for your thoughts. Rita I think sometim...

Re: Osmosis and diffusion
We did this one last week, with 1% starch, just as you have illustrated. One set up worked, in that the starch went black, and the other 6 or so did not work!!! (go figure!) In all of them, the level of water in the thistle funnel went DOWN, Not UP. I am beginning to believe that Science is NOT &quo...

Re: Manganese dioxide
I need a bit more information on this one! I remember, a few years ago, that Manganese Dioxide was "disgraced" and discouraged from use. I went through my store at the time and put orange dots over all the old green dots on my bottles and I have encouraged teachers to use an alternative (l...

New Science Lab?
Hi all, We have just had the Head Master and the Architect wandering through the Science dept in preperation for designing a couple of new (and refurbishing the 2 older) Science labs. They actually asked one of the teaching staff for input (!!!!!!!) and suggested sending her around to some other sch...

Re: Welcome back everyone.
Merilyn, WELCOME BACK! Good to have you back with us, although from the sounds of what you did on HOLIDAYS, I imagine that starting up in a new school and setting up the entire science department from scratch, might be less strenuous than your "Holiday"! Remember, if you need any help, we ...

Re: maintenance chemical storage
I don't know what the law is, but I can't imagine that Maintenance would be exempt from the safety rules that the rest of us have to follow. Here, we have a flammables locker in maintenance and another in Agriculture, also a lockable chemicals cage in Maintenance.

Re: Potassium Dichromate
Ah yes! and it made such GREAT volcanos too! We would make a mound of Dichromate, and put a depression in the top. Fill the depression with potassium permanganate and ignite it with glycerine. The permanganate would give lots of lovely purple flames and then the orange dichromate would quadruple in ...

Re: chemwatch TODAY
Lorrae, just looking at the Chemwatch site now. All the Gold MSDS's seem to be issued on 1/1/2013, but looking at the list of Vendor SDS's for Potassium Dichromate, there is a range of issue dates, ranging from 30/10/2012 (Melbourne Uni) to 14/6/2004 (H&W Cleaning Services). There are half a doz...
