Hi Sue, I think they used to do the same prac here, but not since I've been on the job. However, our Yr 8's make sunscreen at the beginning of each year, very similar ingredients - paraffin, beeswax, wax crayon (for colour) and zinc oxide. It was a nightmare to clean the small beakers used afterward...

Hi Celia. Your faculty should have a copy of the DET Manual for School Assistants Working in Science. That's a good place to start. If not, ask your SAM to produce a copy for you. There has also been discussion on this site - go to Search, type in Job Description, have a read through the threads lis...

Thanks for all the interest - several replies, and private messages already, but need to have a strong idea of numbers before much more can be decided. Please pass this information on to others in your area, eg. the north coast. It may be even more cost effective to have an educator come up for seve...

Hi, Terry, This is something I've been working on this term, too. With advice from another local Lab Tech (thanks, Wendy), I've done up my own on Publisher, which match the ones I used to print off the old Chemwatch. We all seem to do these slightly differently, but I've emailed them to you - hope t...

Hi Judy, Thanks for pointing that out! I was going on what the staff said, having not heard of Schultz's solution before. My reading up this afternoon agrees with you, Judy, so sorry if I've led anyone astray. It's sport now, but I will ask for clarification tomorrow! Just illustrates again why this...

Thanks, Annette
All useful information much appreciated.
Along the same lines, I found this site while working out how include the safety diamonds on my new labels recently.
Hope it's helpful for some of you.

Ours is kept in very tall Winchesters (3L). Have learnt to give it a good shake a day or so before needed, so that the limewater is fresh, to get the best result. I have a few smaller plastic bottles labelled ready to gently decant into, and pour in short bursts, so that no sediment goes in. Cheers,...

Am also concerned about the state of our Chemstore - size and fittings. The shelves on one side are old library moveable ones, not fixed properly, and very narrow. The other has old bookcases with fixed height shelves, also too narrow. There's a timber floor, no sump, inadequate ventilation. Only on...

As Whspa said *Reduce the amount of chemicals stored - ie. meaning the stockpile some older schools have. *Saliva is allowed for digestion experiments, but each s...
