used scalpel blades/biohazard
Can I ask what everyone does with used scalpel blades? I put mine in a biohazard container, but where do you take the biohazard container once full?
Thanks
Thanks

Have bought them and have seen them in catalogues, pretty sure serrata has them . Usually 1cm (or bigger) cubes of various metals.

I've just found out that we do indeed have starter pistols and caps in the school, and they have never been included on the chemical register. My head hurts.

Re: MSDS'S AND GHS
you also need the full sheet on file and available to all staff that use the chemicals. Who would not even know where they were or care for that matter!! I sometimes wonder why I bother. No one EVER looks at them except me. Our head teacher wouldn't even know if they were up to date. One of those t...

Starter pistol

Does anyone know if you need a special license to use them? I can't find any mention on riskassess. Than...

Re: 0.1%
0.1% = 0.1 grams per 100mL (Mass/volume) so for citric and ascorbic acid, weigh out 0.5 grams, dissolve in 500mL. For acetic acid you will need to work out what % acetic acid you have in your stock solution. Glacial , according to the laboratory is18M at 99 -100%, so my calcs, 2M should be 11%, so 4...

Re: cleaning the science labs
I wouldn't think so Sunray. If the place stayed clean for more than 24 hours I might have some more motivation and job satisfaction. At this point it's not top of my list of priorities. I'm not as young and flexible as I used to be.

Re: cleaning the science labs
How much cleaning up of glassware & benches do you do? I know it says in CSIS that students should be cleaning their own glassware and bench areas, but some teachers are better at it than others (and some apparently still take their laundry home to mum!) As I've said before, I've spent the whole...

Re: AUDIT
I have even been told that it is not my job to do the whole school, but when the info came in - guess whose desk it was passed to? When I queried that, I was told that "no one" else had the time, 'someone' had to do it, 'no one ' knew how, and 'everyone' knew I had the skills, then it all...

Is any one else have teachers starting to do pracs from the new textbooks and finding that they don't actually have 40kg of flour sitting around their prep room, and hydrogen peroxide doesn't come in 10L drums?!?!?

Re: Animals in schools
We had Yabbies, stick insects, fish tanks.. but because the HOD had to sign as Animal Welfare Officer and there are strict rules - we now have NONE. I am not sure whether I am sad or happy. At least I don't have to come in on holidays to feed fish or take 3 huge cages of stick insects home to take ...

Animals in schools
Hi all, Does anyone have animals in their schools? At one stage we had a semi functioning fish tank, but the fish died off as the tank was at the back of a lab and would collect everything from chemicals, glassware, pens, paper and lunches. I think the last one went when some darling emptied a bottl...
