Re: separating copper from ore - prac
I've just been given photocopied instructions for this prac. don't know what book it came from but p165 natural resources!!!!!! "To make synthetic copper ore measure equal amts of copper carbonate, sand and plaster of Paris into a small beaker. A teaspoon of each is ideal. Then add a small amou...

Re: Help! Some of my distillation equipment won't come apart!
i agree with the brute force bit. but i have vague memories of something like oil or glycerol. this worked for a burette tap once. i could immerse the whole tap/burette tip in a beaker of the stuff. But condenser/ flask joint is a bit big for that!!!!
Good luck

Re: Oxalic acid saturated soln.
Hi Vic,
think solubility of oxalic acid in water varies with temp. At 15deg, sol is 9.5 g/100mL. at 25deg, sol is 14.3g/100mL.
Like Judy suggests.....Keep adding until no more dissolves could also work.

Re: Sulfate in Fertiliser Prac
In a former life when determing sulfate concentrations, we did it turbimetrically. (i.e. form the barium sulfate ppt and then measure the turbidity against a range of std solutions). This way we didn't have to worry about filtering. definition ....."Turbidity is cloudiness or opacity in the app...

if you want to see snow monkeys in Japan via a "live cam" - still photos updated regularly (hourly) -. http://www.jigokudani-yaenkoen.co.jp/li ... /index.htm
they're much more spectacular in winter i.e. Dec - Apr, because they bathe in the hot springs.
A life of leisure!!!

Re: Potassium Chromate Indicator
Hi Smiley, i agree, why make things more complicated than they need to be. KISS!!! But testing chloride is different to testing chlorine. chloride is something like the salt content of the water. maybe salinity or conductivivty meter could be used as an indicator. Chloride is usually pretty ...

Re: Potassium Chromate Indicator
Hi Carol, trying to trawl through my distant, blurred memory, for a time when i did zillions of titrations determining chloride, i can only guess that the AgNO3 added to the potassium chromate indicator precipitates out any chloride (as AgCl) present in the indicator. if there was any chloride disso...

Re: Paramecium
Hi Rosalie, just found this web site with very specific instructions using grated cucumber. e-aquarium.com.au/paramecium-culture.htm Probably the process using hay, oats, rice would be similar. Whenever i set up a culture, usually takes more than a week. I think the pond water doesn't have m...

Hi bindi, FYI i have a very old book that has approx pH values. .01M NaOH pH 12.0 .1M NaOH pH 13.0 1M NaOH pH 14.0 All these concentrations should show purple. You would need a very week soln to get something less than purple. i just tested my 0.1M NaOH and it goes purple. Sorry I can't be more help...

Re: incubating Agar plates
Sometimes it's hard to compare what happens at tertiary institutions with a school environment. I'm sure uni/tafe have laminar flow cabinets that allow you to safely remove the lid without being exposed to the nasties. :yuck:  Whether they're always used by students is another question. Don...

Re: How much are we supposed to do?
Hi All, On top of all the other jobs mentioned, do you find yourself asked, or feeling obliged to clean benches (i.e. graffiti), sinks and all the other crap that seems to accumulate in science labs. :yuck: because we have old labs, the kids are sitting next to sinks and gas taps to fiddle and poke ...

Re: Dissolved Oxygen meter
Hi All, this is a scratchy area for me #-o but I'll put my 2c in. The amount (concentration in mg/L) of dissolved oxygen in the water is a measurable quantity either by meter or colorimetric (winkler titration method). The temp affects the % saturation of the water. I think with a meter you can inpu...

Re: Nutrient agar plates
Hi All, just got back from having some time off :cheesy: to find this thread. I thought that the bacteria can't go uphill, so maybe that's the thinking behind the design of the agar plate with the overhanging lid??? Is this what the pasteur expt highlights? Correct me if I'm wrong. I still get the s...

Hi Tina,
we got a terrible mess once. Bought new PVA glue and things looked up. I think the quality of the glue (maybe old or cheap) has a bit to do with the result.
Good luck!
