Re: Flame Test

We do flame test (paddle pop method) for the Yr 7 orientation. They have a bunch of older students in the class with them. They do 4 mystery chemicals which they have to work out what they are. We find it a great but simple prac to get them excited about doing science the next year.

Portable Fume hood

Hi all Does anyone have a portable fume hood and if so would you recommend it? We have one built in fume cupboard but with the larger chemistry classes we now have, it is slow going for the students to have their turn. Therefore we are wondering if a portable / ductless fume cupboard would ease the ...

I don't have any crysatalised ginger but have other dried fruit. Think I'll give it a go as I have spare agar plates atm.

Oh that ginger experiment sounds fun. Do you think it would work with another solution?

Geiger Counter

Hi all
Our Geiger counter has died - I sent it in to be inspected and it will cost $460 to replace the tube. It is an IEC brand and although it was purchased in 2015 it is used infrequently. So feeling a little disappointed. Does ayone have recommendations for a more sturdy product?

chipped microscope slides

Hi all We have quite a few prepared microscope slides which are chipped on the corners but otherwise ok. I tried putting masking tape on the sharp edges but have realised this makes focusing (especially at high power) difficult. What do others do with chipped slides to make them safe for students to...

All the enzymes are Red - seems crazy especially as they are only used in very small quantities.

Re: egg membrane

I had to prepare 30 eggs this time. I think they need 24 hours in vinegar and it works better if you rub them a bit several times during the process as well as changing the vinegar at least once. I put 10 eggs in 3 large beakers.

Yes steradent tablets - that was it. Can't be carbonation drops as it is for the surface ratio experiment.

effervescent tablets

Last year someone somewhere suggested a cheap alternative for effervescent tablets, rather than disprin or mylanta. I thought I had noted it but can't find the note and certainly can't remember what it was. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks

Re: cuvette jammed in the spectrophotometer

Thanks heaps - that information was helpful. Took us awhile to work out how to remove the wavelength knob as we had to notice that the top of the knob comes off to reveal a screw. Cuvette now removed and spectro all back together. Hopefully it still actually works.

cuvette jammed in the spectrophotometer

Hi all We have had a bright spark put the cuvette the wrong way in the spectrophotometer. Apparently this is not the first time this has happened but this time it is really jammed. Has anyone got any suggestions apart from pulling the whole thing apart which I am reluctant to do? The model is Spectr...
