Re: Risk Assess and labels

Wow! Hopefully that will solve issues of consistency and access to labels for molarity of solutions that so hard to find in Chemwatch!!

Re: Bucket chemistry

I just find the volumes at times are ridiculous. And there are other pracs that can demonstrate the same things without creating a mess.
Does anyone else have thermometers that measure up to 200deg? All ours are 100 or 110. Though we do have old mercury thermometers.

Re: Bucket chemistry

I find a lot of the pracs in the national curriculum text books impractical. Stage 4 chemical reactions honeycomb type prac needing thermometers measuring up to 154 deg ( because we all have sugar thermometers for toffee) and 110g sugar per group.

Re: Dehydration of sugar using sulfuric acid

The chem teacher ended up warming up the beaker and then adding hot water to the top of the sugar in the beaker. The reaction was almost instant!

Re: Dehydration of sugar using sulfuric acid

I ended up doing 70g sugar and 70ml of sulphuric acid. I gave it a stir and it went black and I thought it wasn't going to work again. So I went in search of different sugar and when I came back it had worked.

Re: Dehydration of sugar using sulfuric acid

Interesting. Ours is very old too. I haven't bought any in the 10 years I have been here. Of course I need it today! Anyway I have done it again with proportions I found on line and it worked!

Dehydration of sugar using sulfuric acid

We have had a disaster this morning. Having used buckets of sugar and tons of sulphuric acid we now have dozens of beakers contaminated and not one of them worked. (I am exaggerating) However we haven't been able to get this to work. We have wet the sugar used the proportions suggested in CSIS every...

Re: LabDisc Data Logger Gensci 13 Wireless Sensor

Hi Rita, Welcome to the mad mad world of School lab assistant. I have never heard of this data logger. We use LabQuest. Very easy to use very user friendly. Expensive though at around $560 a pop plus probes! So yes a huge investment for any school and well worth the research in getting the one that ...
