Re: iodine for photosynthesis

Thanks Graham for that tip.
The length of time it has taken for Iodine to dissolve has frustrated me numerous times in the past
I have just added it to the relevant page in my "The Laboratory"

Re: iodine for photosynthesis

I use 15gm Potassium Iodide plus 3 gm Iodine in 1 Litre of Distilled Water.
It takes a while to dissolve.
I have had few complaints in 10+ years

Re: Brain disection- help please

I use straight metho and have had them soaking for well over a week with no adverse problems. I give them a rinse under water before handing them out to get rid of some of the metho smell.

Re: Looking for Schinta Funnels glass?

Is what you are looking for a sintered glass funnel.
This was discussed sometime last year, I put "funnel" into the search box and found the thread.
It seems they are available from Science supply but at a cost of $56.60 each (ex GST)

Re: text book issue

Our senior text books are distributed thgough the Library so they have the record of who has borrowed what book. They cannot sign out unless the books are accounted for. The juniors do not have an individual science text, rather we have crates of class sets of text books that are taken to the class ...

Re: bouncy balls

I tried this one year when the teacher had asked about making them. I used the recipe from Hienemann Interactive 4 but once I did I had grave reservations about the risks involved. It uses 25mls Latex with 20 ml of 2M hydrocholic Acid. The method is to place the latex in a beaker and slowly add the ...

Re: Burning prac

We use spirit burners fairly frequently in the Junior classes. According to CSIS they may use Ethanol, Pronanol, butanol and Methylated Spirits. Not methanol as that is 11-12. Kerosene is toooooooooooooooo smelly and petrol is a teacher only They are used a lot to demonstrate Dependant and Independa...

Re: "The Laboratory"- manual

"The Laboratory" is far superior to the Working in Science. It doesn't have the pictures at the back which are invaluable when you first start working in Science and need to know whet you are asked for looks like but it does have an incredible range of recipes for just about any indicator,...

Re: Insurance travelling while shopping for school

I pick up most things for school in the afternoon as I am getting my own stuff for tea. (My husband and I usually meet at Coffee Club at 5 for coffee then into Woolworths) I am there anyway, If I slipped on the floor I would not try and claim it as workers comp just because I bought a potato for sch...

My rocks are in Takeaway food containers. Most are fairly small , about 4 x 4 cm. I have different coloured dobs of paint on the different types of rock. Igneous have green paint, Metaporphic red and Sedimentary white. The minerals have 3 different colours depending on whether they are to demonstrat...

I set this up on Friday using Pascoes Bluo that i got and Coles and am very dissapointed in the results. :redcard: Nothing much has happened. The liquid didn't migrate up the cardbord tree at all and there are no signs of crystals. I did use ammonia but I did use my neat ammonia which may have been ...

Re: help please -enzyme prac to demonstrate substrate conc?

I took the seeds out and then pureed about 40gm of the flesh with 200 mls of water or a similar ratio. I suppose it is then up to the teacher whether she varies the amount of capsicum or the amount of H2O2 Different capsicums reaction slightly different, they probably have different amounts of the e...

Our bulk pack lasted about 3 years and worked fine at 3 years.
You also save having to crush the tablets when you get the powder so it disolves better.

Re: Porous Pots for Chemistry

We have several of these in our Chemical store room and I have brought them out about 3 times in the last 14 years. They were used in relation to Galvanic cells in Year 12 Chemistry and showed the same thing as salt bridges in a U tube or filter paper, and were only used for that one lesson each time.

I have the Chemical classes separated in packing groups usually on different shelves.
I don't have the chemical name on the shelf but I do have a photocopied list of what is on each shelf stapled in an obvious place near each shelf.

Re: Bullock eyes

I get pigs eyes from a local butcher usually only 8 at a time as we have 8 workstations in the labs.
I have to give several days noticeas they only cut up the pigs on tuesdays.
They don't charge me for them.
How many classes is that for? Surely he doesn't want one per student.
