Toluene is a solvent for sulfur. Fume cupboard job, though.

The replacement I got for Elodea was called Hydrilla. The pet shop had to order it in for me.

Re: OH&S
Mother, ALL staff in NSW schools are required to complete CSIS training, whether support staff or teaching staff. There are 2 strands - A, B1, C1 for non science & TAS staff & A, B2, C2 for science & TAS staff. Each section takes 45min to complete in a class setting or the notes can be c...

Re: Disease prac
Hi Lyn, You can also buy the bacterial broth (we use E coli & B subtilis) from the same place or you can try making a peppercorn infusion to obtain B subtilis. You can do a search on chemtalk for this. I purchased the broths ~ a year ago & storing them in the fridge I've found they are still...

Re: Carpet in Science Labs
Yes we've got carpet in the centre of two of our labs where the students sit & I rue the day they fitted it. The idea was to make the labs quieter, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. If you do get it, just make sure you allow enough room for all the desks & chairs with studen...

Re: superconductor expt & liquid N
Rainbow - Sky You should be able to get liquid N2 from Newcastle Uni, perhaps you could try the Electron Microscope unit. If you are only using it for that particular prac you'll only need a tiny amount. Otherwise as mentioned any "artificial breeders" or genetics companies should have som...

Re: Safety in Laboratories Training Course
Estelle, I'm pretty sure our science coordinator just read through the facilitator notes & went from there. She photocopied some of the resource sheets onto OHP transparencies & I got out some of the chemicals for her. I know she hasn't done the 4 day OHS course 'cause she sent me to it inst...

Re: test and tag OHS
Slart (hope you don't mind me calling you that) We had the testing machine even before any of us had done the course. Apparently it cost around $600. It's only a small & fits into a briefcase with all the tags etc but it serves the purpose & we can take it anywhere. It usually takes 3 of us ...

Re: Safety in Laboratories Training Course
Pommy, If you have answered all the questions in those sections I mentioned, then you should fill in the CSIS personal evaluation & training record sheet which is the very first page of the participants notes. If you don't have a CSIS coordinator as such then you should get the principal to sign ...

Re: test and tag OHS
Hi Sue, I was one of the lucky (?) ones at my school to do the testing & tagging course 3 years ago. The course was through TAFE & is called Safety Checking of Electrical Appliances (9989A). We tag & test everything yearly & having a few staff that have done the course means we can s...

Re: Safety in Laboratories Training Course
Sue, The info you need to do the CSIS course is in the CSIS folder Vol 1. The CSIS coordinator at your school should be able photocopy the participants notes for you. In the case of science staff it's sections A, B2 and C2. You'll also need a copy of the training support resource sheets from 6 - 24....

Re: Safety in Laboratories Training Course
Rita, I went to that course about 3 years ago. It's about all aspects of safety in labs, from fire safety to ergonomics to chemicals but unfortunately isn't going to get you that CSIS ticket. He gave some very useful information eg it's safer if you're not wearing clothing when using liquid N2 - if ...

Re: Help needed with a MacBook
Sue, I think the Omega stock program only runs on Windows, so if you have parallel systems you should be able to switch over to XP then put the flash drive in. I'm by no means a computer expert but from what I've been told this should work. Apparently a Macbook with parallel programs uses an awful l...

Re: CRO alternatives
Liz,
There's a CRO alternative called Signal Scope 2.0 at http://www.faberacoustical.com
The cost is $144.83 & they have a demo version you can try. We are thinking about buying it.
Hope this helps

Ellice, It sounds as though your mastrings might be the problem. Have you had them very long and do you refrigerate them? We also do this prac every year and I always do a demo first so there's more chance the students will get good results. My nutrient agar recipe is Boil 500ml distilled water. Wei...

Maree, I think you might be better releasing it from wherever the eggs/tadpoles were collected. Having said that we have quite a few reptile books at home that I could look up for you if you needed to hang on to it for a few days. If you wanted to keep it indefinitely you would probably need to get ...

Re: Chemwatch msds
I received an email recently asking us to authorise a letter that chemwatch would send to suppliers to obtain their MSDS. I understood it was because there are holes in the chemwatch database and that would help alleviate the problem. Seems to be mainly for product formulations and not generic chemi...

Re: Medical Check Ups for Employees using chemicals!
Courtney,
Could you please fax me a copy of your info.
Fax # 026772 5697
I've worked here for 18 years & a medical check has never been mentioned.
I have wondered about it though & think it's a good idea.
Thanks
Judy

Thanks for that Kimm,
I probably would have gone for a plain colour but having a pattern makes much more sense.
Does anyone else have other surfaces they can recommend?
Cheers
