Solar energy motor and Fan
We got these out yesterday and they did not work ...only one apparently . OK to be fair , it was overcast and wet ,so the teacher used a couple of microscope lamps . We have done this in the past and it is usually enough to get them spinning if you hold the lamps right up to them . So I got them out...

75v supply.jpg Here's the schematic that the electronics teacher will understand .I added a 100 ohm resistor . This is only as a kind of fuse that will go up in smoke should the kids accidentally short the output leads rather than burn out the diodes and transformer . I'm not saying that this is th...

Re: Making Electro magnets
I reuse the wire . We use cotton covered stuff as the plastic insulated stuff tends to melt and hurt children :whistling2: Electromagnet kits.jpg I prepare the ends ...IE cut back the cotton and add a dab of fingernail polish or PVC to stop it unravelling. We find a 2 meter length is ample .Any long...

It printed OK . Got a piece of Perspex cut at TAS for the bottom and siliconed it in place . All setup waiting for the Agar to cool enough to pour . ready for casting.jpg When it had cooled ,the Comb and end stops come out cleanly . :clap3: This was my biggest concern but it was fine. Combs come out...

I been asked for 8 trays .We only have 5 and they only have 4 sample slots . found one on thingverse that looks good . 3D printing it now . It has to be cheaper than buying one . Fingers crossed [-o< Gel tray.jpg Failing this , I'll be Laser cutting some up in TAS out of Acrylic sheet . No way I'm p...

Re: Photo files too big for chemtalk
Just had to try .
still couldn't send a pic straight off phone ( approx 3000 x4000 pixels)
had to keep resizing it .
seems maximum size is around 1700 pixels on the longest side . 1750 pixels was file too large error

You would think so wouldn't you Merilyn .
Being the curious type ,I double checked , and yup , its just a box sitting on a concrete slab .( lifted it up and looked underneath it ).
Our labs are fairly new ...read 20 years old .
I might check with the GA if there are any plans around.

Chemical Sump/Pit
Labbie said that most DET schools have a storage Pit for Chemicals . https://www.chemtalk.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=46717#p46717 I remembered seeing something under our building so went had another look . I was surprised. There certainly was a tank , but it was connected to the floor drains in our Chem...

Re: Photo files too big for chemtalk
They need to be no larger that 800 pixels on the longest side. I use an App on my Iphone called "resize it". It also allows you to rotate pics if needed. Can't remember if it was free or cost @1.50 Maybe Westlabs can add the Auto resize feature to the board . Most Forums using the latest p...

Re: Electrophoresis Kits
Thanks for your reply. I was looking at these ones from Southern Biology Bluegel Electrophoresis Starter Kit Any feedback? They look like they can be used with both dye and DNA samples? I had a quick look ,very nice units and the internal light and special dye in sample is a big improvement on the ...

Re: Electrophoresis Kits
I would strongly suggest looking at the Dye electrophoresis kits as apposed to the real DNA ones . we had the Carolina DNA ones but the samples were very expensive and had small shelf life . They also require supper dopper expensive Agarose powder and stains . The process was two part requiring over...

Re: RiskAssess chemical codes
So may I ask what have you chosen to do , follow CSIS or RA ratings ?
Not meaning to put you on the spot , just trying to get a feel for what DET schools that use RA are doing .

Re: Disposal of KSCN and CoCl2?
