Re: Electric pressure cooker
I have an All American autoclave that was purchased from Haines. It wasn't cheap, they are now listed at $990 but it works really well. The model I have sits on a separate hot plate - I use the single hot plates you can pick up for about $60. There are plug in units that have their own heating eleme...

Re: Wanted Amber Dropper Bottles
CC - I bought bottles from Serrata recently and they fit the old style caps perfectly. Our oldest bottles/droppers would be about 12 or 14 years old. I needed more bottles and droppers and found it was cheaper to buy them separately if you need large quantities (100+). We only had sets of eight drop...

Just be aware that if you are in a non-DET school you may have different directions.

Thanks, Julie. I am counting down the days - 38 working days to go! I'm pleased you've been able to pick up more work. How do you find it after TAFE? Much different?

Re: Interview tips and questions
Things like why you want to work at that school, what system are you familiar with regarding prac ordering, what are your strengths in working in a team. Be aware of current labelling requirements. SDSs, chemical registers, risk assessments. What to do if there was a chemical spill. I've always been...

Don't get too jealous of the weather. This last weekend was more like winter. Spring seems a long time coming. It will probably be one of those years where it goes from cold to stinking hot and we get nothing in between! Enjoy your break.

Re: URGENT request for help!
Kris - I get nothing. The only way I get to clean at the end of the year is the students have days away from classes towards the end - assembly, presentation, day activity day. Then we have a couple of days with no students at all. I hate the end of the year as teachers start wanting to do "fun...

Re: URGENT request for help!
Hi Kris A difficult situation! Where I currently work, ALL teachers have to order ALL pracs. Even if they are just using scissors and glue. I have a 24 hours notice policy on simple pracs where all the equipment/chemicals are available "off the shelf" anything requiring preparation is 48 h...

Re: Welcome back everyone
I see our education system differently. My son is in Year 11 and I've found the expectation on him has been much greater than my school days. He was being taught the basics of essay writing from Year 6. Certainly by Year 7, they were expected to submit assessments in essay and then later, report for...

Re: Plastic storage Sulfuric acid
I'm with J. You shouldn't have to give more than one bottle to a class and that would be for a teacher demo anyway. I've found some of the solutions (acids, even vinegar; copper sulfate) are tough on the rubber teats. I've bought a stack of caps for the droppers so the worst offenders are capped aft...

We had a week at home, during which we went to Canberra to the History of the World in 100 Objects exhibition at the National Museum. Fantastic! Worthwhile going. Second week we went to Melbourne. Had a great time there, although we all came down with head colds - not fun. Why is it, while you're on...

Re: fume cupboard nsw area
I'd like to hear from anyone as well. We have a contract with Dynaflow but it seems like they have a monopoly on the system. Nearly $1000 for them to fit perspex extensions on the screens to our double sided fume cupboard. It works better now, but why hadn't they realised this a long time ago and wh...

Re: What paper towel do you get ?
I buy the rolls of paper towel from Officemax - Tork 90m rolls in a pack of 16. These work out cheaper than the inter-leaved towel. Important if you have to pay for it out of your budget. I was happy with the idea of just leaving the roll in the teachers (locked) cupboard. When they needed to use it...

Re: Glass tubing
Sorry, J, can't help with a supplier but a tip I learnt when trying to get tubing through a stopper is to use a slightly larger cork borer to push open the hole (if it is a pre-made hole in the stopper). Thread the tubing through the borer, then remove the borer. Alway wrap a thick cloth/towel aroun...

Re: GHS on Mini SDS
No, we don't here. I work on the premise that the SDSs need to be accessible to all staff and they should have read the SDS before using the chemical. Not saying that is what happens but that is what is supposed to happen! I can see the advantages of the mini sheet in the case of an emergency eg spi...
