Re: Glass tubing
Is there a reason it has to be glass? I use rigid PPE tubing because I have cut myself too many times before. I use the same trick as above with the cork borers....works a treat.

Boiling it works but you need to either stopper it to use straight away. I wouldn't think stirring it would work but a sonicator would.

What system are you in? The IEU down here is very supportive of Lab techs and fight for our rights. I have personally had an issue resolved by them in the past (issue regarding yard duty requirements) I know the AEU come along to our conferences as well but unsure how effective they are for their me...

Chemical disposal
Can anyone tell me how they dispose of Iron Sulphate solution? In small quantities I just wash down the sink (into our chemical sump) but I have a litre at once to get rid of.
Also waste copper chloride solid?

Re: GHS Labeling
I know you guys have to use the coloured dots as per you DET document, but technically, according to the GHS legislation nothing but what is set out in the legislation is permitted on the label. But you are right, you have to follow the directive by your employer as ultimately, the principal is the ...

Re: GHS Labeling
All the info in the FAQ section of the RiskAssess labeling function assures us it is compliant with all relevant rules and laws governing decanted chemicals (and it's way easier to use than ChemWatch). As I've said before, I won't make my own labels using DGen or any other method because, A. My Wor...

Yes Merilyn, thats what we do as well. I only ever trust original containers to the senior Chem teacher. We relabel specimen containers with a small amount of solid for in classroom use.

Re: GHS Labeling
I interpreted the new amendment for Safe Work Australia to say that we didn't re label if it was pre 1/1/2017. Prior to the amendment that came out a week or so ago, it was the case that if it left the chem store, it had to be relabeled. The amendments have been issued but are yet to be passed into ...

Re: asbestos mats
Not sure where or how they were tested. They were taken away by our WHS compliance officer and we were just given the feedback. I know that there is a "quick " test that can be done on suspected material as there is an asbestos audit being done in our systemic catholic schools at the momen...

We had a big stocktake of all out mats a couple of years ago. I was told to sit aside any that were rough on one side, smooth on the other and were "flecked or speckled" We had about 10 or so which were sent for testing and apparently half tested positive and were disposed of. I know the m...

Re: GHS Labeling
Phil Crisp told people to put black tape over existing label and put new GHS label on the bottle - I would never do this, it is a back up for us labbies. Label over the back of the bottle, that way you can prove that bottle is copper sulphate or what ever. We must cover our own backs so to speak. F...

Re: GHS Labeling
Yes. Follow Worksafe (or equiv in your state) That is who will be called in for any potential incident. Personally if I was instructed to re-label an original container I would refuse and just chuck and reorder. There is so much room for error with catastrophic consequences. I personally refuse to t...
