My replacement
Hi gang, I've mentioned before about having term 2 off (LSL). Well, my HOD just told me that he and me will be doing the interviewing on Monday. I've never been on the other end, so am a bit anxious about the whole thing, and I need some help with relevant questions. There are two people. One is a t...

Re: Mini MSDS in Chemwatch
Hi all, Last year I updated all our MSDS. I have one copy in the Prep Room. In the labs (six), we keep a folder of mini MSDS's, and these need to be updated as well. Can anyone tell me an easy way to do this? Can they be purchased, or is it a case of downloading from Chemwatch, and photocopying. I'm...

Re: Position 2011
Hi all,
Just thought I'd give this another try. I've had no luck so far in finding someone to replace me in term 2.

Cosmetic chemistry
Hi gang,
I had a set of sheets titled 'Cosmetic chemistry' with things like bath salts, bath bombs, etc, that kicked around here for ever, and now when I need them I can't find them! Does anyone have some recipes along these lines. Thanks for any help.

I recently used Oxalic acid solution for a student with potassium permanganate stains on his shirt. Wash hands well as oxalic acid is poisonous.

Re: making rocks
Hi Smee,
If you want an alternative to edible rocks, we've done the plaster of Paris one with
1 pebbles, gravel, sand
2 gravel
3 gravel, soil
4 gravel, sand.
do in a polystyrene cup, and when set, peel away to reveal your rocks.

Hi Smee,
We are doing new labs in the future, so I'm very interested in what you have. Are those trolleys between sink unit able to be wheeled away?
All looks lovely and shiny. Best way to keep it like that, is ban any pracs!!
Cheers, Ellice

Oh, and just a thought. When we do volcanoes, we use gelatine, bicarb and Aluminium sulfate. Good gush, nice and lumpy.

Re: the Effect of pH on enzyme activity
Hi Smee, We've just done this prac. With catalase and hydrogen peroxide this year. Every year we try something different!!! For the pH part, what I did this time was give them buffered enzyme solutions, and to do this I made up the solution of catalase (which is pH7), then to some I added drops of 0...

Re: Help! Some of my distillation equipment won't come apart!
I have a book 'Use and care of Laboratory glassware', written in 1976 (there's a lot of old stuff around here!), and one of the recommendations: using a dropper, apply the following mixture (which is to seep between the cemented surfaces):- conc HCl 3mL, glycerol 5mL, chloral hydrate 10g. Let stand ...

I'm in Wollongong, and Spotlight would be the place I'd start for those sorts of things. They have a good craft section, as well as the materials.
Hope this helps.
