Re: Mineral and rock safety alert

I have my head in the sand on this one until next year when hopefully I will have time to deal with it.

Re: Textbook Donation

I have contacts with a charity that sends books to a school in Zambia, but at the moment we have an abundance of books and nowhere to store them until the next container goes out. It's such a shame that it costs so much to send them. If you have a contact in Rotary I think they used to send books ov...

Re: what formal qualifications, if any do you all have?

I came to science with absolutely no science background - more years ago than I care to remember :yuck: I have a degree in librarianship, which was not very helpful. :whistling2: Recently I did the Certificate III Laboratory skills course externally through Armidale TAFE. Considered doing Cert IV bu...

Re: flame test in spray bottles??

I used to have trouble with the spray nozzles clogging up but now after each use I remove the sprayers, replace with normal lid, and run some hot water through the sprayers to remove the chemicals. Now they last a lot longer as there are no chemicals to crystalise inside them. The sprayers don't get...

Re: Disabled Access to labs

We have a crazy amount of ramps all around the school. I think the doors would be wide enough but haven't put it to the test. Considering the amount of money spent on ramps and guide rails and tactile paving for visually impaired, how crazy would it be if the doors are not wide enough?! 8O :...

Re: Disabled Access to labs

We have a bench in each lab that can be lowered/raised and the sink drain is flexible so it can move with the adjustment. So far no one has needed to use any of them. I think they have a similar one in Food Tech.

Re: SLAMN Conference 2015

I will be staying with friends in Winston Hills. Public transport is not great from their house. Any chance anyone will be driving from nearby and happy to pick up a hitch-hiker?

Re: Dehydration of sugar using sulfuric acid

My acid was stored in clear glass and had been here for a long time. I thought it would be perfect for the sugar experiment, to use it up out of the way, but it was not to be. Just made a black sticky mess that was a problem to clean up. #-o

Re: Dehydration of sugar using sulfuric acid

We had trouble getting ours to work, with some old acid that had been around quite a while, so I bought some new acid and it works a treat. Not sure if it was just old, or contaminated in some way........it was a bit brown :redcard: :redcard:

Not yet, but trying to get in touch with a friend I sometimes stay with. Public transport may be an issue from her house but I'm sure I'll get around it.

Will have a close look at the reagents in these instructions and see if they match what we've got. Might be able to fudge something. :giggle:
