Re: Discrepancies on Chemwatch
A weird thing happened on the way to printing an sds for Sodium suldide. When I looked it up it had a hazard alert of extreme, when I hit print the image that came up was listed as moderate. The printed copy says extreme!! What the??? See attached I've found that . I think what happens is you get a...

Re: How many fume cabinets do you have?
I convinced them a compactus for chemicals was a really bad idea. Re eyewashes - I had to push to get an eyewash in my prep room - 1 lab (the furthest) has a shower, the other 2 have wall mounted hand held/eyewash/shower fittings. The prep room had nothing. It now has a hand held eyewash/shower that...

Re: How many fume cabinets do you have?
Yep the principal showed me the plans. When I asked where the fume hoods were he said there was one - in the lab - he expects me to work around the lab schedule - at the moment there IS NO workaround - apart from excursions or other anomalies, and sport afternoon - they are fully booked . My lprep r...

How many fume cabinets do you have?
Our school is thinking of doing a lab refurb. Currently we have about 700 students, 3 labs that are in pretty much constant use, and 2 fume hoods that open both onto the prep room and the adjoining labs. They want to have 3 wet labs, one dry lab and ONE fume hood that is located in the designated ch...

Student medications
Hello learned people . We have a cupboard at the front office that is used to store student medications. Do we need SDS for all these medications, or are they exempt, as they are for that student only? And where does asprin, panadol, ventolin and epipens fit into the equation?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Electrical conductivity apparatus
Can anyone recommend me some readily available non-conducting liquid for a conductivity prac? The prac has methylated spirits listed, but as they are using powerpacks with alligator clips that send sparks a mile high when they come into contact this paranoid little labbie didnt think it was a good i...

Re: Food in labs
Hi all, I know this an old thread, but, still interested. If it was up to me I would ban eating in labs . I brought it up to one of the OHS people, who is also one of the science teachers, quite a while ago. As by my copy of CSIS, there is no outright ban on eating in labs, ( I think it says.. hold ...

smelling substances.
Hi. Teacher has asked for dropper bottles of smelly substances so kids can be blindfolded and try to guess what they are. Problem - most of the stuff I have here that has any smell comes up with GHS warnings not to inhale - eg - essences, euclyptus oil, even vinegar. Any suggestions?

alcohol based hand sanitiser
Another " I'm not sure I can win here " safety question - those of you who have that alcohol based hand sanitiser - how do you dispose of the empty containers and any that migt be left in the bottom of the pump bottle? I ask because a teacher caught me on the run and asked. I told him that...

Re: Disposal of Potassium Permanganate?
Just reading this little thread, hoping someone can clear my confusion. I'm in a catholic school, and am printing out (well trying to) new GHS labels for potassium permanganate solution. The GHS label has a big pictogram of a dead fish and warnings not to release to the environment. The MSDS says to...

Hazardous, or not?
Hi, I've noticed with the GHS coming in that I am having trouble determining with the new format if a substance is to be viewed as "hazardous" or not. With the old MSDS it would say " Hazardous substance" or "dangerous good" or not hazardous etc. I've been printing out ...

Made some yesterday, should have checked this thread first. It was originally quite pink but has faded considerably. I will try the layer of phenolphthalein on the top trick, if that doesn't work its back to the drawing board.

Re: Ongoing practicals.
Sorry, I should have been more specific. The beakers etc the crystals are currently growing in are not at the moment labelled with anything other thatn (in some instances) the students' names and classes. The solutions/ chemical bottles themselves are labelled.

Ongoing practicals.
With regards to practical labs that are ongoing, particularly crystal growing, where chemicals etc are left in the lab for some period, do you label these? Or rely on the common sense of teachers to ensure they are left undisturbed until they are finished with. Just wondering about the safety aspect...
