Universal Indicator solution

When I went to use my universal indicator solution this morning which I purchased earlier this year I found it is distinctly red instead of green. This has never happened to me before. Is it still ok to use, how do I get it back to green? Any help would be much appreciated.

I would also like to know what the minimum requirements are as well as we get ours tested every 6 months by Dynaflow.

Re: human pathogens in agar plates

I don't think it's a good idea, we certainly don't do it at my school. We stick to skin and surface swabs (but not from the toilet blocks) and get good enough results from these. You are also right that sealing all the way round is not good either, just tape in three spots.

waste bottle labels

Hi everyone,

I wanted to know where you print your hazard labels from for waste bottles(e.g. heavy metal, halogenated) or if you make up your own what you include. Some photos would be good if possible.

Thanks in advance

Re: Frozen rats

Thanks all for your replies, from another source I have just found out that whole animal dissections are generally not to be done in schools according to the Animal Welfare act 2004 section 6 and if schools insist on doing them they need to apply to the Ethics Comitttee for approval. So that does it...

Frozen rats

Hi everyone, Was wondering where you all buy your frozen rats from. I had placed an order with Southern Biological last week but they rang me just now to say their supply of frozen rats was not as abundant as in the past and they could not tell me when and how many they would be able to get at any o...

Re: Barium sulfate substitute

The barium sulfate is usually sprinkled on the soil and then universal indicator dropwise on top of the barium sulfate. The colour of the barium sulfate can then be compared with a colour chart. So replace barium sulfate with baby/talcum powder, I have heard it works but have not seen it myself.

I believe you can use baby/talcum powder instead.

Re: Dilute H2O2

When diluting any liquid simply use the formula M1 x V1 = M2 x V2 where M = concentration V = volume So to make up 250ml of 6% hydrogen peroxide from 35% 0.35 x V1 = 0.06 x 0.250 therefore V1 = 0.043 this means that you take 43ml of the 35% hydrogen peroxide and then add distilled water to make up 2...

Thank you to all for your replies. I think I will definitely need to be more assertive in my dealings with the teachers and insist on 24 hours notice.

Notice for lab requests

Hi All,

I was just wondering how much notice you insist on being given for lab requests by the teachers? I often get given half a days notice even for pracs requiring the preparation of chemicals and hate feeling rushed. Do I refuse to prepare these??

I use the mini version of the MSDS and print them off for inclusion with the chemicals supplied to the classes so that the teacher can read through them and alert the students to the hazards.

chlorophyl chromatography

Hi All, Our year 8's are having a problem running a successful chromatogram of extracted chlorophyl. We are using green and brownish leaves off a cherry blossom tree, extracting the chlorophyl in an ethanol water bath and the result is a uniform green streak, no bands of colour. We also tried rubbin...

Repairing power supply

Hi All,

Any suggestions on who to contact to repair an IEC high voltage power supply (5000V) would be much appreciated. Preferably in the Sydney metrolpolitan area.

Also who is the best supplier for pads of graph paper? Our usual supplier does not stock them any more.

Thanks to everyone for their replies, we were told after a Board inspection we needed "better" storage even for dilute chemicals. Although they didn't clarify what this meant. I will show our Science HOD all your posts.
