Hi everyone,
I have an old bottle of calcium granules that have turned completely white (they look like coconut flakes). There is no reaction with water or dilute HCl. Any ideas about how to dispose of would be much appreciated.

Re: Chemical Stocktake in a Catholic School
Hi Rita, I am at an Independent school and this is what I do. Our Chemical Register just lists all the hazardous chemicals from the Chemical store not dilute dropper bottles. Non hazardous chemicals are not listed in the Chemical Register but I do stocktake them in a separate file. I use an excel sp...

Re: SDS
My understanding is that you need a Chemical Register with SDS and correct labelling for all hazardous substances whether bought or made up. So you need to check whether what you are making up and using is hazardous.

For the schools that provide lab coats, how do you go about having them washed and how often are they washed?

Re: Manganese dioxide
We use it for junior classes but I have a small amount already deposited in the bottom of the test tube for the students to just add the hydrogen peroxide to and test for the oxygen liberated. Saves on students using a ridiculous amount of the manganese dioxide powder and all the mess!

Re: flame test in spray bottles??
We soak paddle pop sticks in concentrated solutions of the cations overnight. The students then place the paddle pop sticks in the flame just long enough to see the flame colour (any longer and the sticks start to burn). It works well.

Household cleaners and medications
Hi everyone, I am in the process of updating our hazardous chemicals register and printing SDS. Talc
Hi everyone,
I received an email this week recommending the disposal of talc from mineral kits as it poses an asbestos risk. Has anyone else received this email? Do you use talc at your school for testing hardness? Will you be getting rid of your talc specimens?
Thanks

Only use distilled water for year 12 titrations or when a teacher specifically asks for it, generally just use tap water for making up solutions.

You may have a leak? Try reversing the connections and see if you now get more oxygen than hydrogen, if so definitely a leak.
