5 burnt out milli ammeters in 2 days. Is it possible to replace the fuse wire? Has anyone repaired burnt out units successfully. Does anyone have an ammeter - milli or micro - that has a proper fuse inside that can be replaced or do you just buy new meters?

Re: Shipwrecks and Salvage prac
This is how I did it. Procedure 1) Place 200 ml of de-ionised water in a 500 mL beaker. Heat until the water just begins to boil. Remove the heat and stir in 8 g of powdered agar. Heat gently while stirring until the agar is evenly dispersed throughout the water. 2) Add about I ml of 0.1 M potassium...

Re: Quadrats?
I made our quadrats out of small diameter conduit but threaded cord through and tied it off. 1m x 1m square and they fold up for easy storage.

Re: sodium polyacrylate
I was asked if we could get some but sodium polyacrylate isn't in appendix D of CSIS. When we looked at the SDS is stated that there is 'limited evidence of carcinogenic effect'. Apparently it's the dust only that is a problem. They decided to use a baby's nappy to show how it expands and not purcha...

Re: Hazardous, or not?
I'm having the same issues. I've looked at some of the new SDS and seem to have to search through the document for the hazard statement. It's not nearly as obvious as the MSDS, where there was the statement at the front of the document. Also, many companies are still coming to terms with the new GHS...

Re: Rabbit pluck and sheep eyes
I used to get eyes from one abbatoir through the local butcher (they wouldn't deal directly with schools) but they are now charging GST for them and the butcher was putting his bit on as well. They were $2.50 each so I gave them away. They now come from another butcher who gets them fom the south co...

Re: chemical orders through smartbuy
Apparently if you order chemicals through Serrata, they get them from Science Supply Australia, which is why they take so long to come. I contacted Smartbuy and we can get them direct from Science Supply. They come a bit quicker but unfortunately both Serrata and Science Supply both charge freight

Re: Holding Sodium in their hands:(:(
Some of our Y7 & Y8 have been experimenting with ice cubes and salt. They heard about it on Facebook. Put the salt on the skin of your leg and hold an ice cube on it.
Result is frostbite - I do the first aid here and I've had some bad burns.
What's with kids these days?

Re: SDS + Chemwatch
You are right about only pure chemicals having to be counted for the chemical register except if you purchase a diluted solution. For example you have to have an MSDS for a 1M hydrochloric acid if you order it in. However, if you make it up yourself you only have to have the mini (1 page) that is st...

Re: SDS + Chemwatch
We had a fire at the school 2 years ago and all power was cut off. Fire brigade was able to use the chemical register and paper copies of MSDS to find out where all the chemicals were stored and what they were.

Re: riskassess
We have just started using Riskassess. I think once it's being used properly it will be good, however, I used to get orders the day before (mostly) and now I find them on the riskassess program in the morning on the day they are wanted. Before this program I could get things ready in the afternoon, ...

Hi Sue
Lots of work of a different kind on a farm but I know you have been looking forward to this. Sorry to see you moving from Newcastle and losing you from science but if you're up this way again get in touch.

Re: bell jars
Haines had one called 'vacuum plate' with a stopcock. Science supply also has one but without a stopcock - called 'surface plate - for bell jars'. Both are the same price $190. With the stopcock you can turn off the vacuum pump and only hear the bell. Some suppliers have them with the vacuum pumps i...

Re: bell jars
Hi Rowyrow You need to buy a base with a tap. Ours allows the tap to be turned to seal the bell jar and then we can turn the pump off. Much easier to hear the sound as it increases. When you get the base you will see where the hoses go. It's best to take the stopper out of the bell jar and put silic...
