Re: Benedict's & Biuret

Hi Elizabeth,

Do you use it in the same proportions as the recipe by lada, ie. do you just substitute sodium hydroxide to sodium carbonate? I might make up both and try them out to see which one works the best.

Not sure if making crystal garden is the same as growing crystal? ?? We use plastic petri dishes or watch glasses to grow crystal, if that helps at all

Re: Stocktake Time

We also recently got a software called Laboratory stock controller 2, which is supposed to be good for lab inventories, however it takes a bit of getting to know it its a little bit complicated, so I think we are going to stay with the Excel one instead, as pretty much everyone can use excel these d...

Re: Stocktake Time

Every time i buy something new, break something (with the exception of glassware), get more chemicals or finish chemicals, I update the inventory. I just ...

Re: Rockets

I think you need to use DIET coke, it does not work with normal coke, and I think it has to be the spearmint or mint mentos not the fruity ones... Why I cannot remember at this moment, but when I do I will write back. And you do not need to scrape the sides, just plunk it in! We did this exp last we...

Re: monocular or biocular

Wouldnt the monocular ones get more use becasuse the two different ones ar actually used for different purposes? Dissecting microscopes are for larger object, such as maybe little live crustaceans or looking at whole object, whereas a compound microscope is used for things that require higher magnif...

Re: monocular or biocular

I have had monocoluar microscopes at both the schools I have worked at (Shore and Wenona) which seemed to be enough for what the students need them for. However, I personally hate monocular microscopes, as they are not used anywhere else in the science world. Its much better to learn to use a biocul...

Re: AIS OHS Course?

Hi All, I went to that course last thursday and I found it a bit of a waste of time, as they spent HALF the day teaching people how to search and navigate chemgold (chemwatch) webpage, 8O. I would have liked it better if they actually spent some more time on risk assessments instead... Maybe you sho...

Re: Dry Yeast

I actually thought it was 60degres celcius. In my cookbook it say for fresh yeast its 37 degrees (body temperature), but when using dried yeast it should be heated to 60degrees for it to work properly, to get doughs to rise properly. However, that may just be the case for baking...

Re: Cobalt Chloride Paper

Well isnt that what the colour changing is for, if the beads turn purple/pink you know theres moisture in the jar, ie they have done their job. You dont have to get ridd of the pink beads, you can recover most of them by putting into incubator for a few days to dry, most will turn blue again. I do m...

Re: prepared slides

Hi again, Forgot to say that clear nail varnish will also do the job, not as well though and you have to be careful not to get too many airbubbles. what you should do to best avoid this is; place a generous amount of nailvarnish unto the COVERSLIP and then gently lower the slide onto it, turn it ove...
