Re: Nitrates

You know, I kept all of our old desiccators in the storeroom because I had room, but not because I use them. But maybe we should use them to store the hydroscopic chemicals. I have thrown out quite a few jars of Red Phosphorous because try as I might I couldn't stop it turning to liquid. But when I ...

Re: Setting up yet another prep room

Oh Sue that's an impossible situation. Your head teacher really must jump up and down to the boss. It used to be up to the SAM here for SAS allocations but the last few principals have the say. We are about to get shafted in Science because we are not in the principal's ear, and I am trying to rev u...

Re: chemwatch labels

I thought I would have a look at the Dgen labels, but I must have a totally different screen because it isn't there. When I log on to Chemwatch, it comes up as Chemgold III. Can't see Dgen at all. :-(

Re: Year 12 Forensic Chemistry

We make our own electrophoresis prac stuff. Nothing expensive: just need some agar to make the gel; a clear take away container to set gel in; food colouring; couple of graphite rods, shaped to fit together in a sort of cross with a rubber band; salt for the electrolyte solution; aligator clip leads...

Re: chemwatch labels

I'm with fibreweb. I ended up designing my own labels, using chemwatch and importing into a template on Word. But I'm not going to change anything till the department says so and what they want. No-one ever checked what I'd done or even commented, so until there are CLEAR instructions (which I don't...

Chemwatch for NSW govt schools

I have managed to log on to Chemgold 3, but when trying to do a search for MSDS or labels, it just spins and get no reults. Is anyone else (particularly in Govt schools) having this problem? Is there any advice to what is happening with chemwatch? I've no idea what we are supposed to do in the meant...

May I just add,I found that it does work best if you let the Agar cool down to 60deg C before adding the NaOH and phenolphthalein. :D

Re: Starch - negative test

This may be too late, but if you mean another indicator, you could use anything from Alizarin Yellow thru to Universal Indicator. I was thinking of Methyl Orange but I haven't tried it, but I doubt if any of them would react.

Re: Nitric acid where do you store it?

Acetic acid doesn't seem to be very friendly at all. You can't store it near alcohols, nor near Nitric acid. As our acids are on shelves in an open acid bay, I have got acetic acid on a separate shelf to the Nitric acid. The flammables (alcohols) are in a cupboard so the fumes congregate a bit, so I...

It seems to be available in the US at a cost prohibitive to most schools. Sigma Aldrich. But couldn't easily see a vendor here.

Re: Making Gold Nanoparticles

When it is too hard to find the stuff teachers want, ask "what part of the syllabus/curriculum is that in". It may well be a cool experiement, but is it necessary for a high school?
BTW I couldn't find it in Chemwatch or Serrata either.

Re: GHS and Labels

Well... I can't even get to first base. Maybe I have a different screen to you, but I can't find a a-z icon or house anywhere. I just realised we are on Chemgold III, not Chemwatch. I thought they were the same thing. Well they are the same company, aren't they? :?
