Re: Position Vacant Newcastle

Thanks for all your kind wishes. My hubby is retiring early (before ill health gets chronic) and we will be going back to our little acreage in the country with our two goats and grow veges. :D I may be looking for some casual work round Bathurst/ Mudgee way though, so keep me in mind (hint, hint LO...

Position Vacant Newcastle

I have resigned as the Lab Assistant at Newcastle Grammar School so the school will be advertising for a new person soon or early in the New year to start middle/late January. If anyone's interested keep an eye on the Newcastle Herald and "My Career" online.

Re: What electrical wire do you use

Hi Kimmy There were rolls (and rolls) of thin insulated wire here when I started and it breaks off very easily. Finally I have started putting 2 strands of it together, twisting them for the full length, and connecting the 4mm plugs or alligator clips to the bare ends (twisted together). None of the...

Re: Air track accessories

Hi
We bought quite a few spare bits for our Air Track from IEC (Industrial Equipment and Control) which is an Australian Company that originally made a lot of the Science equipment for schools. They have a website .

Re: Heat Conductivity - Ball and Ring

Our ball and ring sets keep falling apart (chain breaks) and to make matters interesting - they are ALL different sizes. Also some are made for the ball to go through when cold and some aren't! So every time they are used I have to "match the parts" and put them back together. Sue G

Re: NICNAS surveys

Hi You can email the surveys to Maureen or Phillip. I got a new survey for bromine last week but haven't had time to do it yet! Thanks to those who have filled the acids surveys out. Have many "out of NSW" labbies filled them in? :-) NICNAS were hoping for an Australia wide idea of usage. ...

Re: NICNAS surveys

Hi Everyone I'm not sure many people saw this last time as not many surveys were returned. Please consider filling them in as schools need to be seen as important users of Hydrochloric and Sulfuric acid so the Government doesn't restrict our access to them for "security reasons". I know yo...

Re: Phenolphthalein Agar

Been making this agar for 4 yrs and had the worst time this year! Used Agar 750 gel for first time and the first batch didn't set. The company suggested doulbling the amount - this set so hard the top cracked! Tried for the middle amount and finally third time lucky. But.....half a 500g contai...

NICNAS surveys

Hi everyone NICNAS is the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme. Last year I stumbled across surveys they were conducting for chemicals of "Security concern". This meant they were looking at restrictions of supply. These chemicals included Hydrochloric and Sulfur...

Re: RiskAssess software

Thanks Rosalie I didn't think of that! :? I typed in Copper Sulphate and Sulfate but you have to be so exact sometimes. Your way gets round any problems. Must try that on the other chemicals that don't come up...... :D You've made my day and I take back anything bad I thought about Risk Assess. Than...

Re: RiskAssess software

Hi everyone We have had Risk Assess access for 2 years too. It is easy to use - so easy I have to stop myself using it for the teachers! I've been told that they are the ones in the classroom so they have to do it. One thing with Risk Assess, I couldn't find Copper Sulfate listed in it anywhere desp...

Re: Sulfate in Fertiliser Prac

Hi Fibreweb We have 2 classes yr 12 who do it every year. I got the proper filter paper for filtering Barium sulfate for the Bruchner funnels and etc, etc.........and it still doesn't work properly! :? Our teachers have become philosophical about it - they do it as an exercise to show how it should ...

Re: Divided petri dishes plastic

Hi Labbie I bought a box of 500 plastic petrie dishes earlier this year from (the dreaded) Serrata. $85 for the box. I was told they were sterile at manufacture but not resterilised after packaging. I have had another box here since I came, that has worked perfectly for agar plates, so i didn't see ...

Re: Maternity/LS leave position - Bathurst

Congratulations Megs. It's a nice place. I had 2 kids at Bathurst and could walk around town easily with a pram because it's so flat. We still have a place out of town and are possibly going to retire back there in 18mths - unfortunately a little late for your maternity leave! :D Best of wishes Sue G

Re: Test Tagging of electrical equipment?

Hi Ian I had the situation where the Maintenance Dept Head (one of his men had the test and tag certificate and was an electrician) didn't want to do ANY test and tagging because of the "change" to the OHS act. (Independent School). This went on for 18mths after equipment should have been t...

Hi pkij You need the pondwater as a starter. I tried to just use hay and nothing happened. :? Don't use too much hay though. Now I have a couple of conical flasks on the window shelf and they have produced "little critters" for more than a year. I've usually got a "black" thumb (...

Re: Safety in the Science Laboratories

Hi Voice I haven't seen one that shuts everything off. I could use one of those in my Prep room - whoever designed this place didn't think the Lab Assistant needed protecting. The gas shut off valve is in the ceiling, there is no water shut off, and no electrical safety cut off. I'm expendable...

Re: Safety in the Science Laboratories

Hi Voice I'm a little confused (nothing new). We have valves that shut off gas and water to all the benches in each lab (located under teachers desk). We also have an "emergency shut down" switch for electrical isolation on the front wall in each lab also. Are you referring to gas or elect...
