Is there any more information about this yet? I just did a seach in Chemtalk for it after Liz's comment in the forum on the CSIS in-service coming up. I think it would be great if we could take advantage of them being so close together!

Re: 2007 Chemical Safety in Schools Update Course
I'm thinking of going... I just got it in the mail today and I'll have to get approval. Perhaps we 'country kids' can car-pool it to Sydney? I can't imagine they would let my fly down for the day!

Re: Safety glasses hygiene
So what happens when the kids leave? Do they take the glasses with them or do they get cleaned and passed on to the new batch of yr 7 kids? Also, do you do the same for lab coats?

Re: Design of new laboratory.
Some things I wish for but don't have are a sink big enough to wash a 2L measuring cylinder and a wall mounted draining rack near the sink. Also, make sure shelves are the right size for storage. We use the plastic dropper bottle trays which hold 10 and fit perfectly on our shelves. Also, a teacher ...

Re: tin nitrate
I'll be using tin chloride instead as that seems to be the only tin compound available and we have it in stock. It is for a yr 12 prac on galvanic cells. The teacher has said this will work ok. If anyone happens to come across tin nitrate in their travels though, do tell!
Thanks,

tin nitrate
Anyone know where I can get tin nitrate? I've looked in q-stores, serrata and science supply for it and it isn't there... I need it for Friday which doesn't give me much time! I don't really want to ask other schools if I can have some unless I know I can replace it.

Thank you! I guess my instructions were misssing the 'filter' step... Not to worry - hopefully they all indicate what they are supposed to by the time I finish with them!

Re: indicators
Today I actually had time to start making up my indicators... but when I got to Litmus, I found that 10g in 500ml water (which is what my recipe says) isn't dissolving. I had it on the hotplate/magnetic stirrer for ages, then I added extra water to make it up to almost 1L but it still hasn't dissolv...

Re: Do i really need one?
Have a look at the forum 'dishwashers' under chemistry labware and general. There was a bit of discussion about what's good a few weeks/months ago. I don't have one so I can't really comment, except to say I would have more time for keeping solution bottles full if I didn't spend so much time washin...

Re: hydrogen balloons
One of the teachers here saus Zinc and Sulfuric Acid with a little bit of copper sulfate works well. Only need a small amount of zinc. Blow the balloon up a few times with air first to stretch it out a bit too.

Re: Eyes for dissection
I just purchased 3 model eyes (about 15cm I think - don't have them with me now) on Wednesday from DealsDirect and they arrived today. They are quite good although you don't get the gooey fun of cutting up a real eye. If you can't get a real one though, a model is good. Go to http://<URL removed, se...

Re: Taste Tests and PTU
If it is what I am thinking of, we used this paper when I was at uni in genetics. It is in brussell sprouts so those people who like brussel sprouts can't taste the PTU and those who don't like brussel sprouts can taste it. I used it after that as an excuse not to eat them when I went home on holida...

Hi All,
I'm needing to make up some more indicators. Some of my recipes say to use ethanol (eg for phenolphthalein and methyl red). Does metho do the job just as well? It is far cheaper and easier to order...

Re: Wash Bottles what sort??
The only problem I have with wash bottles is putting the lid on after filling them! I frequently squirt myself or whatever happens to be nearby as i screw the lid back on in a hurry... I guess it doesn't matter if you have side or top squirters - they still squirt!

I just had a look at the website... Where does it say what is on and how much it costs? I clicked on the link to “Our Rapidly Changing World†conference (I assume this is the one you are talking about?) but can't see anything for lab techs. Am in looking in the right place?
