Re: Physical Phenomena Experiments - Science in a box

Well Kim, I might as well get in on the act. The table of contents gives the impression that these are simple pracs. and that is what I need for my staff on occasion.
So, if you could also send me a copy I would appreciate it.
Thank you.

Re: Risk Assess: Victorian Labbies

I do believe that Risk Assess is acceptable in all Victorian schools. However, it is not acceptable to me. Why? Because it does not tell you what to do if a risk becomes a reality. e.g. What if a student tastes potassium chloride, what does the teacher do regarding first aid? This is a fault of the...

Check it out at Southern Biological and if it is too dear buy it from the U.S. With our dollar the way it is, this might be cheaper!

Re: Where do you buy your beakers from?

In Melbourne Officemax's latest catalogue has some science pages. The difference now is that Officemax outsource their Science equipment so the order goes onto another supplier. Bomex 500ml Beakers are item no. 8018995 @ $4.90 Simax 600ml Beakers are item no. 8019096 @ $5.08 Ask for a new catalogue....

Re: MSDS

G'day Linda,
I do not send out the MSDS sheets with a prac. I send out the Risk Assessment sheet. I have noticed that many schools have the teaching staff complete these RA sheets. You need to check the policy with you Science boss.

Re: air conditioners in school

I am putting in the website below which looks at the Compliance Codes for workers facilities that are to be provided by the employer. This is a Victorian Worksafe website but I am sure that other states would have similar. Check out this one and realise that codes are not being met. It is a H & ...

Material Safety Data Sheets

G'day All, I have heard news yesterday that the whole MSDS system is changing. Each chemical will need to have a brand new MSDS drawn up and I think a whole different class structure developed. This is at least 12 months away, but currently under review during the Australian Worksafe meetings with a...

Re: MSDS updating issue

This happened to me when MSDS first became law. 3 quarters of my chemicals came from non existent suppliers. I am at a government school in Victoria. This was before Chemwatch. I just found a website that had thousands of MSDS from many, many suppliers and used those. Some years later I had a Worksa...

Re: Help - Seeking advice/opinions

This thread about the ability of staff to perform other duties is quite interesting. If one is qualified to teach gymnastics and is told to do so as part of his/her duties, then for that time, the 'coach' should be paid a casual rate of a specialist coach. And, let's face it, some coaches can charge...

Re: copying old videos on to DVds

I have done this at home, with a DVD/VHS recorder. It works very well. If it is a 3 hour video you would only need to set it up with a monitor so that you could see what was happening at the start and after approx. 3 hours finalise the DVD format. You would need an alarm so that you could get on wit...

Re: Equilibrium prac with safranin & methylene blue

This is direct from a "demonstration" book. I am not this smart! Methylene blue appears to act as a catalyst in the reaction of glucose with oxygen. Methylene blue is a redox indicator that is blue in its oxidised form and colourless in its reduced form. When the liquid is shaken dissolved...

I have just used some Araldite to adhere new numbers to rocks. It wasn't messy and quite easy. You might be surprised!
Good luck which ever you go.

Of course, I would like to be added to the list. Is it possible for you to put the recipe and directions on the website. There are plenty of us down here in Victoria that would love to learn this skill and little chance of doing so. and far cheaper for you! Thanks for any help in this area. Maree

G'day Fiona, Are you at a private school? If so, then look at your contract to see your conditions of work. You may be required to work during the holidays. If you work in a Government school then conditions of employment may be different and are usually so. If that is the case get in touch with you...

I see that you are in the ACT Tigger so I am sure that you have some Coles and/or Woolworths there. It is in the refrigerator section of the store around the margarine section. It is usually up high and goes by the name 'dripping'. It can be in a block like butter or in a tall plastic tub 'WIK dripp...

Chemical Calculations

I don't know if this has been offered before but I thought I would do it anyway. I have occasionally asked for help diluting solutions when I know I am better than that. I just can't be bothered thinking some days. I don't know if someone has posted this but: http://www.lgpnet.com/science/dilution.h...
