Re: First aid kits in prep rooms
Hi. Just wondering what should be in first aid kits for science? Do they have to be as complete as the general first aid kits? Thanks.

Re: Science Assistant Training
We are a government school. The only training I can find on myPL are two Introduction to Science courses. We are a regional school so I don't expect there will be anything locally.

Re: Length of work day
It is all about the admin staff. They even get a catered morning tea every week with the Exec staff to which science, kitchen and library are excluded!

Re: Length of work day
Our award is 45 minute lunch and 10 minute inhouse morning tea break. Add them together and you get 55 minutes. Our office ladies have the times rolled together and add 5 minutes finishing at 3.35pm. I have always finished at 3.30pm for 25 years but now the Principal insists we all finish at the sam...

Re: School Uniforms
I think it does matter what they are wearing underneath lab coats. If their clothing catches alight and they have synthetics next to their skin it will melt onto the skin causing lifelong disfigurement.

Re: School Uniforms
Well, we use safety glasses and have a footwear policy but no lab coats. Also, we are in Grafton so lab coats are hot, even I don't wear mine in summer.

School Uniforms
Hi. Just wondering if any other high school is switching over to the synthetic type sports uniform for everyday wear? I am concerned about students wearing these clothes in science practical lessons using Bunsen burners or organic chemicals. I have always worn close fitting cotton shirts for this re...

Dear Pommy
As far as I know Chemwatch access is online now and the Manifest section will be totally secure once everyone has a User Name and Password.

Re: Chemgold Manifest
Dear Dime
According to Paul Drayton Chemwatch User Names and Passwords are being sent to schools in the next couple of days. They are specific to your school but I am not sure you will get one if you haven't used the Manifest section previously?

Thanks for the information. I will try Alan Smith today. I did contact Chemwatch Head Office and they sent me back to Paul Drayton who is the one I have been dealing with at DET.
Cheers.

Just a word of warning to those making ginger beer. If you use sugar and yeast you will create alcohol and CO2. It is proportional.

Re: Chemgold Manifest
Thanks Richard but I think the codes have to come from DET. I have been emailing Paul Drayton (their IT guru) but so far he has been too busy. So I was looking for a Department address.
Cheers Bev.

Thanks Labtrash. Your method of making Bromine Water is so easy. I was wondering what strength sodium hypochlorite you use. I tried Bleach(4% chlorine) and did not dilute. This makes a very strong solution. Ciao.

Prepared Slides
To fix nailpolish imprints of stomates onto slides I just use sticky tape (clear cellotape). This method also works for strands of nylon, cotton, hair and scales off butterflies, moths and pollen. Great for junior introductory slides where there tends to be more breakages. To capture specimens simpl...
