Re: lab refurb or oh God cant someone help me
Have been back in the labs after our refurb for 3 years now. We are still getting things fixed so we can actually operate. Just basic stuff like the gas. Funny thing is, we were given the grant for a plan that included 2 senior labs with a 2 way fumecupboard joining them, and a larger storage room. ...

Re: Lab. Tech. status update
My bad. I'm actually 0.218. Which doesn't include the year 4s, 5s, and 6s (of which there are 2 classes of each) because they are infrequent "customers".

Re: What Do You Tell People?
I work 24 hours a week and get paid for 40 weeks a year. I am a single mum and when the kids were little, ie I was getting a benefit, I had to go into Centrelink and Housing a couple of times at least around the holidays because of my pay changing. My paymaster said they could spread my pay over 52 ...

Re: Job Description
We have about 500 students in the 7-10 campus. Then there is the calls from the year 4-6 teachers who want to do something in our labs and need my help, not to mention the year 5s have a taster day which always includes science. Did I mention we have four feeder primary schools as well as our own an...

Advancing up Levels
Hi there, just wondering how other lab techs get to advance up the levels. I started at level 3 nearly 12 years ago and am still there. Though a Tech I know automatically advances a level after each year at his school. According to our business manager I have to apply to the principal to get reclass...

Re: Training Lab Assisstant
I took long service leave last year. In preparation I completed(sort of) a lab manual I have been putting together specific to this school-which included info about this web site-and got to spend a week with him. Due to my increased duties, an extra lab, and having at least 3 non science classes usi...

Re: Rehabilitating Plasticine?
I gave up on using plasticine as it would be hit and miss as to weather it was a rock or not. Now I use playdough that I make myself-same recipe as above but I use a bit under 2 cups of boiling water so I don't need to cook the dough. For storing I put the colours in ziploc bags and the bags in an i...

Re: Text book's systems??????
Text books for all subjects at my school are allocated through the library. Our librarian is awesome . It is a bit hectic at the start of the year but by the end of week two all the Maths and Science books are issued. The students name is put on inside cover so they can't swap. And at the end of the...

Re: lab refurb or oh God cant someone help me
Great news, they are not putting a thoroughfare through my chem handling area. They are still butchering other parts of the prep room and the labs, but the result will be inconvenient rather then unsafe. Thankyou everyone for your advice and support. I had been challenging the architects for 11 mont...

Re: lab refurb or oh God cant someone help me
Workplace Standards Tasmania told me to ask the architects for their Risk Assesment on the changes they want to make in theprep room. Only problem is I am not allowed to talk to them. The Head of Science finally convinced the project manager to have a meeting which included me. Only problem is he or...

lab refurb or oh God cant someone help me
We are having some work done in our two labs and my prep room. The architects, in all their wisdom ( she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm) have decided to put a thoroughfare straight through my chem preparation area. The chem store room will be on one side and the fume cupboard on the other (ye...

We crucify our rats too. I nail them to wooden boards. I make sure I use long enough nails so I can stack them on top of each other. It's a great space saver.

Re: slime borax
We also use Borax for slime, but we mix it with a 50% PVA glue solution. We get the kids to mix it in a ziplock bag. That way they have something to store it in, and there isn't the hassle of washing slime from beakers. ( Their washing skills are nearly non existant. I threaten to set them the washi...
