Re: Distillation for juniors
So a bit of head scratching and I come up with a simple version. Its just a glass tube inside a larger tube . The hardest part was cutting the large glass tube . It worked too , pulled 20mls of distillate from it be...

Distillation for juniors
Ever since I've been here , we always had this basic air distillation prac for junior classes. It was hopeless .Steam would shoot out the end unless you literally held a match under the flask . At most you'd end up with a few drips of condensate out the end . Air_still_1024x1024.jpg[/a...

Re: PLNTS Introduction to Science

She , just like you worked it out and lamented in a similar fashion as you :console: ...stupid ,stupid stupid . The other question that got her ...

Re: Buying Chemicals
Oh I see , they have changed it .
Oh well that's fine by me . If I can't see a price ,I will shop elsewhere. Simple, I only have X amount to spend each year . I will buy where I know how much it will cost .

Re: Sodium Hydroxide solution
I will also check out drain cleaner some of which have other stuff in them I've noticed. Sorry I may have been a bit cryptic. I was suggesting you can just tip it down the drain ( with the tap running ) rather than pay for waste disposal of it. We just use Plain Caustic Soda from the Supermarket he...

Re: making a compound
If its black stuff ,I remove it by pulling a length through folded sand paper . A couple of pulls and its gone . Probably stating the obvious , but when you heat it in the crucible , the lid should be on . Then when you lift the lid ( with tongs) , it lets in fresh oxygen and bursts into flames . Al...

Re: Radiation cans
Its always exciting seeing what a new school has squirrelled away . Usually its the same ol same ol , but sometimes you come across some real gems you’ve never seen before . I’ve been at this school for over 5 years now and I still occasionally open a cupboard or drawer and think whoo , how have I n...

Re: Paper Chromatography Solvents
We mostly do it as a junior (year8 I think) prac so they care little about the outcome :console: . Certainly wouldn't be allowed to use Hexane as it has always been Year 11-12 only . Incidentally , Hexane is teacher only now on Riskaccess . I am curious what sort of improvement your method gets thou...

Re: Paper Chromatography Solvents
We use methylated spirits and any soft leaves - so pinch stuff from the garden. I'm not sure of the method, but I do know they have to heat it first - usually a water bath set up. Sorry, can't help any more! That's what we use here too Merilyn . The Chlorophyll is extracted from the leaves by placi...

Just got asked to randomly walk through a class wearing something unusual and carrying something interesting .
Apparently its an observation skills exercise .

Re: Data Harvest communication error
Glad you got it sorted . Yes , you have to press hold power for 3-5 seconds to fully power off . That's something you'll probably have to do after every prac to save the batteries . ....otherwise , as you found out they just go to standby . Do sure about training . Never heard of for them . If it he...
