Re: Rheostat
Just had a good look at ours and we have 3 different types here too .They all have the resistance (ohms) and current (amps) on the adjuster knob . Ours range from 10.5 - 11.5 ohms with currents from 5 - 5.6 amps . It would seem its not too critical so long as its in this range . ( The 50 -75 ) ones ...

Re: Rheostat
Two schools I work in use the 11 ohm 5A (5.6 Amp) type with the carbon brushes . Carbon brushes ( the bit that contacts the resistor ) are better than the ones without ....That's why the ones with carbon brushes are dearer. ....and why they will out last the ones with metal brushes . The 16 ohm 6A w...

Re: Register of Hazardous Chemicals
Just found another Ammonium Molybdate ( chemwatch number 10049-1 ) ...this one is also full of Hazard statements and has two pictograms yet the signal word says Not applicable in the Chemgold MSDS . They still have not corrected the error for Ammonium thiocyanate ....such a bloody waste of time cros...

Re: Register of Hazardous Chemicals
Recently I was labelling Ammonium Thiocyanate, from Chemwatch labels onto a another bottle (lid broke on original). The new GHS labels do not have "Hazardous" on the label.Adrianna Hmmm this happened to me today while labelling this Chemical . ( OK , hazardous was the wrong terminology .....

Thanks for the offer Merilyn  LOL , but seriously it was Athletics Carnival yesterday and there is only sooo much Labeling you can do :whistling2: I hate seeing expensive gear sitting around either because its not working or it's too expensive to run. The Dept had already thrown a good $750-$...

Upgrading old Caralina Electrophoresus for Dye
We have had an older DNA electrophoresis kit .It originally cost around $500 . Then we bought a replacement kit at just under $200 .( this contains Another lot of Cut DNA samples , Carbon fibre electrodes , TBA buffer sol"n , stain and the ridiculously expensive Agarose powder . Twice in the la...

Not sure if you mean to end up with an empty egg shell Samantham , but I recall as kids making a small hole at each end of the egg and blowing the contents of the egg out the other end . Can't remember if the membrane came out with it or not . From memory we labouriously scratch the hole with a pen ...

Re: Find a GHS labeled product challenge
At my other school I am training up a new Labbie .I found the Container of Copper Sulfate that come from SSA with a GHS label so I could show her what they look like and the important stuff that needs to go on a GHS label .
Guess what...it had no signal word on it ....there is no hope

Find a GHS labeled product challenge
I've been wondering how serious the manufacturers and suppliers are about all this GHS stuff . In the last month I have received 7 chemicals between the two schools I'm at and IIRC only 1 was in GHS format. So I wondered about domestic Chemicals .I had a pretty good look in the cleaning section of o...

Re: Chemical Store "odours"
Ours is about 15 years old .It has its odour but I don't mind it  . It's fitted with an exhaust fan which comes on when you turn on the lights and remains on for about 10-15 minutes after the lights are switched off .The door is fairly tight fitting and there is minimal to no smell outside it ....

Re: Plaster of Paris
Just went to put this away .The label says Chem supply Plaster of paris. Chemwatch says this is non hazardous and there are therefore no phrases or GHS symbols . The Chemwatch MSDS is 2013 As the original label is not on the container I have no way of telling who the real supplier was . Other suppli...

Re: GHS Labeling
Jennag , I feel your frustration and it is why I am leaving Dropper bottles to last .....kind of hoping there will be a last minute moment of reality where WHS and the DoE actually get their S..t together and realize that we can't realistically produce a 25ml dropper bottle that is WHS compliant ......

Re: Phenolphthalein bubbling
If you mix ethanol and water it goes cloudy looking .......lots of tiny bubbles are generated and float to the top . The only labeling on our 15 year old Chem store is the words "Chem store ".... :boring :whistling2: : ...We have no GHS labelling on our Chem store room door.... However I see no issues with having them either and will add them if it's needed. Incidentally , I'm still confused about this ....

Re: Was there an official memo about GHS ?
Well I would have a reasonable guess that by the 1st Jan 2017 95% of schools will be non compliant simply because nobody told them about it .linotas wrote: Total compliance is mandatory by 1st Jan 2017.
What happens if a school is non compliant ? are all science pracs banned until the problem is rectified ?

Re: Was there an official memo about GHS ?
linotas....sorry for the flippant sounding question ....it was my bad attempt at sarcasm towards the DoE's apparent failure to notify us of what is a serious undertaking . Obviously if its Law we must do our best to comply .....and certainly its a monumental task , I would make a conservative guesti...

Hmmm just got off the blower to a labbie I know at another DEC school ....seems first he's heard about it too . Thank you for all your reply's so far . I wonder how can it be that this has slipped by in nearly 4 years since the 2011 WHS act that nobody in the education Dept has officially alerted us...

Was there an official memo about GHS ?
I ask this because my off sider says he has never seen an official directive from the DEC about GHS .( And he is quite meticulous with his info) I only became aware of it myself after seeing a demo label software offer from Omega ....again not official from DEC. I then became curious and found it is...
