Re: Lighting Bunsens

Morning everyone, I use small foil trays sent out with the matches. They are marked "used matches" and I am very happy when they are returned with used matches. This has stopped matches down the sink and in bunsens but, my issue is that they get emptied into the fire bucket before they are...

Re: Tips for next year

Oh Macca! I try and try to find out the scope and sequence for the year, but do you think I am privvy to it? i am definitely getting too old, I can't be bothered chasing it up. I am completely happy with the fact they must submit requests 48hrs in advance and even better if the prac requires a groce...

Re: egg drop

Morning Rosalie,
We give students 6 A4 sheets of paper (great for used paper) and 1 metre of masking tape. Teacher drops egg standing on a ladder (from approx. 2.5 metres high). Always interesting to see how students think!

Re: BYO lab coats?

Hi Rosalie, We use aprons for junior classes (vinyl type) that are hung on hooks in the labs. We provide lab coats for seniors that they care for during their time of senior science and at the end of Yr12 they wash them and return to us for the next lot coming through. I wipe down the junior aprons ...

OMG! Can they challenge us with more things? I have carefully hoarded these things too.

I have read somewhere that balloons are being considered for banning. Alternative - sheep stomach?

Re: what weird/quirky things do your teachers ask of you?

Morning Everyone, These Stile pracs are doing my head in! And I agree with Merilyn1 about food wastage. There are days when I ask myself are we science or are we food tech! Next week we are going into Oreo Moon Phases... I ask you, do we really need to supply so many Oreo biscuits that we buy the su...

Re: Potassium Permanganate Disposal

Morning my fellow colleagues, I recently discovered that 1 part vinegar to 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide cleans up potassium permanganate stains a treat! This morning I tried putting some in a small beaker of potassium permanganate waste and it went clear. Are there any chemists out there who could te...

Re: Buying Chemicals

Thanks for all your input folks. I do have an email login with Westlab but just not one attached to an account. I think I will take the weekend to consider my choices. I, like you all, don't have time to farnarkle around chasing up things that. I don't know about you guys, but I am tiring of having ...

Buying Chemicals

Morning, I usually have purchased my chemicals through Westlab but now the new system of not being able to view chemicals and prices unless I am a registered credit account is a pain in the neck. Of course, my admin don't want me to know our account login. How do you (my trusty brains trust) order c...

Re: RiskAssess chemical codes

Morning everyone, I have been reading with interest about the conflict between CSIS and RiskAssess. I am of the opinion (not knowing what date CSIS was produced) that Philip Crisp makes his bread and butter from RiskAssess and can't afford to be wrong. Having been one of the people who originally cr...
