Hey Bindi! Sorry I haven't gotten back to you before this but have been as busy a trout swimming upstream! I haven't got the details at the moment as my HT has them and (typically) is unavailable to retrieve them. As soon as I can I will fax details to you. Regards, Lou. P.S Just wondering what subu...

Re: Safety in Laboratories Training Course
Hey Celia,
Have just faxed the info off to you.
Maybe those of us from out of town can find accomodation together?
This course may not be the CSIS course but I am looking forward to it and meeting fellow chemtalkers! So Cindy, Rosalie, Merrita, Robbie and Celia here's hoping!

Safety in Laboratories Training Course
Hi everyone!
I was wondering if anyone has heard about the "Safety in Laboratories" course running over 19th and 20th June at Ravenswood School for girls. I think my boss is keen to get me in having missed out on the CSIS course last year.
Anyone else going?

Re: Swan neck glass tubes???
Sassi, Do a search for Pasteur's experiment and also look at the glass tubing thread. I think this is what you want to know about. I am at that stage as well and I share with you there are times when I curse his experiment. Someone in one of those threads suggested using rubber tubing instead. Hope ...

Mensa Challenge
Hi all, I thought to share an email that I think is quite clever and maybe the chemtak family can take up the challenge as I'm sure you are all clever and certainly very witty! Even some of those "Ginger Meggs" collective nouns are good fun too! So here goes anyway, put your thinking caps ...

Re: Silly Putty - Heinemann Science 2
Hi Laurena! The Silly Putty expt in "Science Focus 1" uses saturated Borax solution and we've never had a failure. So - add equal quantities of PVA and water (eg 2 teaspoons), mix thoroughly and then add equal amount of sat. Borax soln (eg 2 teaspoons) mix thoroughly and then rinse your lu...

Kristin - you are very imaginative! Have you seen the email going around about the Mensa competition to pick a word out of the dictionary, alter it by either adding, subtracting or changing one letter and supplying a new definition? EG BOZONE - the substance surrounding stupid people that stops less...

Re: Sourcing Rats for Dissection
It was the same for me "42", the days where the science teacher gassed the rats. EEwww! But I am at the age now that I can't stand the thought of killing something to look inside it and personally would pay for the model rat that you can pull apart as if you are dissecting it or a CD! Gutl...

I love your style Barbara! There is always plenty to do here although there are times when you just want to get off your feet. That's when I have a sit and look at chemtalk, follow any links hints or tips given and generally have a breather (all 15 -20 mins of it!) Oh well, must get back to the grin...

Hey Voice! It took me a while to realize it but the way I have my page settings for this site, at the bottom of the forum I happen to be reading at the time, there is a section with related topics listed. Under Artificial blood listed under this forum, there is recipes and a really great site from J...

Re: Help with page number or section on
Hi everyone! My school has checked twice now in the three years I have been here as to who needs to do CSIS and each time I have put my hand up. The seminar held at the of last year would have been a godsend to attend but unfortunately by the time the executive here decided to approve my attandance ...

Re: risk assessements for science focus textbooks
Hi Ian,
The Risk assessments are found under the heading of Teacher Resources and include risk assessments for the lab tech, the student or the teacher (if they are doing a demo). There are also recipes for the experiments too!
Regards,
Lou.

Hi Cindy, I'm like you, unwilling to say much because I can't say a lot with confidence! But I learn something every day and certainly pay homage to those who have experience and share their knowledge. Adam did a great thing when he started this site. By the way, Happy Birthday to "rae" and...

Re: Phenolphthalein agar sheets
I too, use the Laboratory as a bible and have made the phenolphthalein agar to their recipe. The only thing I do differently is that I add 1g phenolphthalein powder after the sodium hydroxide which gives a more than adequate pink and the results of the experiment is always good. Saves a lot of time ...

Re: Dishwashers
I cut my hand last year washing up glassware and required four stitches. As someone had said then and I say now, Workcover sees the amount of glassware to be washed up as a hazard and realistically should be done in a dishwasher thus reducing the risk of serious injury. Maybe try that angle with you...
