Hi All,
I'm wondering how long 'school safe' bacteria from Southern Biological actually lasts?
Thanks in advance

It's also a good idea to store corrosives on a low shelf so that, if a bottle leaks or breaks, the solution can only reach your boots or ankles rather than face or arms

Re: Lab Tech Position North Coast NSW
Hi All
Zali (Nic) was working with me at end of last year at Kotara High.
It was great to work with a real Science enthusiast. We achieved so much in the short time especially with Chemgold 3 manifest. I can't see the economics in understaffing our positions.

Re: Soggy Chemicals
Hi MariaC
I have several dessicators for hydroscopic ( or is it deiquescent ) chemicals. I keep litmus paper in them also. They're not very expensive and worth investing in to avoid future problems.

Re: How to make nutrient agar
Hi All I have a new jar of Peptone. Thought I'd try weighing into 5gm lots and freezing but found that to be a bit messy and needing lots of patience, which I don't have at present. Keeping in the fridge sounds a good idea too. Has anyone tried storing it in a dessicator with self indicating silica ...

Re: URGENT - exploding test tubes!!
We use porcelein chips too - for distillation etc - would not use marble chips.
Until I had risk assess I was not always aware of what teachers were doing with the items they asked for. Silly me. I just thought you were talking about marble chips and wondered why you couln't find them.

Hi Labbie
But when might we get the updated CSIS? That's what I want to know.

Re: riskassess
Hi All I open risk assess first thing and refer to it throughout the day, in case of very late entries. Also it allows me to start jobs for the next few days earlier than I might have before because the schedule sets things out in sequence and is so easy to use. At first I was "creating modifia...

Re: URGENT - exploding test tubes!!
Hi Rosalie I have just purchased marble chips from Serrata Item No 1038843. Its under Calcium Carbonate with Marble chips in brackets. I have not had to buy test tubes since there was plentiful supply in store room when I arrived here 9 years ago. Hope I dont get the exploding type when I eventually...

Re: Wax Paper
hi All You need solid paraffin wax, like candle wax - melt it carefully and drag ordinary A4 paper through - we cut it in half first -easier to cover and makes more. You have to be careful not too hot - fire hazard. The kids do the rest with magnets and iron filings. Some teachers prefer iron powder ...

There is a sofa bed if anyone is unable to find accomodation. I am travelling by train from Newcastle, so perhaps I ca...

Re: RiskAssess software
Hi Krysia We have had risk assess software since beginning of this year after recommendation from another labbie. The younger teachers have taken to it like ducks to water, while the oldies are reluctant to varying degrees. I love it, as it replaces bits of paper that can be lost, that sometimes are...

Hi All
My Senior Science teacher has asked me to get some Selenium salts.
I have looked in Serrata and Westlab catalogues without success.
Any ideas? Please

ASET NSW
Hi NSW Labbies, I know we're all busy getting organised before the holidays, but we only have until the end of this week to comment on the draft document that ASET-NSW has put together. There's a large committee of people trying to improve our working conditions - so if possible try to get there and...
