Re: Chemical disposal

If your local tip has an EPA recycling shed, you can take waste chemicals there and they will be recycled.

I could be wrong, but to my mind taking swabs from places around the school isn't subculturing.

Re: egg membrane

Till needed that is.
Wash gently under running water then carefully place in a beaker of water. Swirl a highlighter into a
the water.
The colour will be taken up by the egg leaving the water clear.
One for the Y6's.

I can't think of what it would be either. Ask them to show you the prac if it's in a book or online.

Re: Agar Plates

A strip of Parafilm is excellent for sealing plates as it stretches as you slowly pull it around the edge of the plate.

Re: mini or full MSDS's (sds's)

Superbug, I'm at an independent school and we had our inspection for registration last year. I have only mini MSDS' in the labs and none with the Hazardous Chemicals Register that's kept at the office. They looked at the Register but didn't make any comment about any missing MSDS. They were more con...

You might need to use a test tube peg to clip the 2 beakers together so you can hold the smaller one in place.

There seems to be quite a few chemicals missing from appendix D and yet others I've never heard of. Does anyone use ammonium vanadate?

Re: stereomicroscope illuminators

We use bedlamps instead as we've found the microscope lamps aren't really bright enough. Useful for quite a few things as well, like comparing temperature increases of black and white cans when it's a cloudy day.

Re: Fixing slinkies?

I've fixed lots of them and you do need 2 people. One person holds one end while the other twists and twists till it untangles. The plastic ones are much better but the teachers don't think they are as good.

Re: text book issue

If your library won't issue the textbooks then you'll have to do it. Get class lists on the first day back and ask each teacher when they plan (day and period) to hand out the books. Don't let the teachers get their hands on any books beforehand. You take the books in and record the number against e...

Do you have a container in the lab for heavy metal waste? I would put it in there. btw I was at the uni recently and they were doing flame tests for Science in the Bush. They had the metals (aqueous solns) in small beakers with a paddle pop stick soaking in each. I was impressed with that idea and a...

Re: pressure cooker

I bought mine from Big W. I think it was about $160 but it is larger than the old one and safer to use.
It doesn't have the jiggly thing on top, you just click on the handle and presto!
