G'day,
our Biology teacher reckons they are bloodworms and are a sign of pollution. She learnt this from Streamwatch.
Hope this helps,
~Robyn

Re: human cheek cells, prepared microscope slides
Thank you Sue,
I have their website available and their price is not bad. I hope the contrast/staining is OK.
We are looking for minigrids also but they cost more than $25 each there, maybe ISSCO is worth a try..........

Re: Maintenance Schedule
Hi All, I was asked by my HD recently for maintenance items that the Science department and the school are responsible for, especially during the Christmas break, when contractors and the school maintenance team can get to them unhindered. So far what we have come up with is: Science Department- 1. ...

mitosis video
Hi All,
our favourite mitosis video (from Video Classroom) is no longer working well and we have to replace it. The original supplier doesn't seem to be still in business.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement??
Cheers,
~Robyn

Re: oxygen removing solution
G'day all,
I am very in favour of the boiling water technique but our teachers are very sceptical.
Can you give me more details? How long did you boil it and how soon after it cooled did you use it? We need it (the oxygen free water) to turn methylene blue clear.
Thanks,
~Robyn

Re: What a way to start the term!
Hi Helen, One of my end of term jobs is to dispose of all our dissection meat which we keep frozen until the freezer drawer is full. Fortunately, the abattoir we deal with are happy so far to take back the meat for recycling. (into blood and bone meal I guess.) I can sympathasise with your dilemma.....

oxygen removing solution
Hi All, and welcome back to a new term. Has anyone been asked to supply a sodium dithionite (sodium hydrosulfite) solution as a means for removing oxygen from water prior to photosynthesis and respiration experiments? We need it for year 7, it is only approved for years 11-12, to be used with cautio...

Re: viewing live yeast cells
Hello there, If you have these attachments, you can optically induce contrast into living and colourless material under the microscope. If the teacher uses a video microscope that displays to the classroom via a monitor- 1. Phase contrast technique. You need to have the kit which is special phase co...

radiation warning sign
Hi All,
I am looking to print my own radiation warning sign to post onto the door of where these sources are kept.
A quick look at the forums did not come up with what I require.
Has anyone else seen this sign?
Regards,
~Robyn

Re: Bunsen Burners
Hello Diana,
its never been a problem, I guess the heating has softened the wax plug?
Perhaps an ordinary sewing needle would do as they come in some very fine sizes.
Don't forget to do the 'poking' from inside to the outside of the jet hole.....
All the best,
~Robyn

Hi all, this job (therapeutic?) comes around regularly, doesn't it? I wait till I have a plastic bucket of these little suckers. Have ready: a needle pointed dissecting needle; triangular file; pliers, tissues. I find using another bunsen, lit with a tissue draped around the base works well. The sic...

Re: laboratory coats quality
Hi Sue,
we get our lab coats from Victoria at a cost of $26 (+GST) for less than 5 in number. I can PM you with the details if you don't get a better offer. They are new, white and we are very happy with the quality.
Have a great long weekend, too!

Re: Onion root
Hi,
by Googling 'onion root stain', it comes up with a few ideas that may jog your teachers memory. I have been lucky to have been given an onion root squash with superb mitosis displayed in all it's stages. It's labelled '5 AU stain'-wish I was a histologist to know what that means!
Good luck,
