Re: Rouse Hill Anglican Lab Assistant

Hello Linotas, I’m sorry you’ve taken my reply out of context. Like Tasmania, WA techs are paid more than their NSW counterparts. We also have specific roles and cannot be shunted to other areas on the whim of the school’s management. My post was meant to empathise with NSW lab ...

Re: Rouse Hill Anglican Lab Assistant

Actually it's an Independant Anglican school
My apologies for getting the religious denomination wrong I should have typed independent or non-government.
Does this change anything though?

Re: Rouse Hill Anglican Lab Assistant

Hi everyone, Having read on this forum what is expected of NSW technicians and the poor pay and conditions generally offered, I find it a darn cheek that the key duties for this job includes preparation of safety assessments as shown below. I would like to know the legal responsibilities and/or rami...

I've put a few orders their way this year, mainly for chemicals and glassware. Most orders have arrived within 2-3 weeks - not bad for freight to the West, no breakages and no discrepancies.

Hi Currallee,
I've quickly scanned a prac we used to do eons ago in the West. If it's suitable, let me know and I'll do a better scan and re-attach.

Re: Retort Stands, Clamps and Boss Heads

Hi Lorrae, I've just bought new clamps and retort stands from Met-App in Victoria. Like Krysia, we bought the blue, cork-lined ones a couple of years ago and at least half have broken - all in the same place, so a design flaw there I think. The old Met-App clamps, bossheads and retorts that have bee...

NO2 tubes

Hi everyone, We've been trying to source a pair of NO2 tubes for the NO2/N2O4 equilibrium for some time with no success. I know other schools in WA are also wanting to buy these tubes and figured that maybe East coasters might be interested too. This morning the following was in my inbox: Hi Our lab...

Re: How long do you have for orders?

I once had a discussion with a teacher who flouted the rules all the time by ordering at the last minute. He tried to order a prac at 3.30pm on a Friday for 8.30am Monday morning, claiming he was giving me 65 hours notice. My response was that since I worked only 8 hours a day and not 24, in future ...

Re: making up Universal indicator

I have tracked down some thymol...so going to get mixing on thursday.

I'm sure you're aware Narelle, but for those who are inexperienced, thymol and thymol blue are two totally different chemicals and it's the latter that is used in the preparation of UI.

Re: Help needed urgently

This is too late to help you now, but we do this using a mixture of sand, salt (NaCl) and copper II chloride. Add ethanol to a sample of the mixture - this dissolves the copper II chloride. Decant the solution off (may require a couple of rinses) and leave to evaporate to reclaim the CuCl2, then add...

Re: copying old videos on to DVds

Dick Smith sell VHS to DVD converters for around $65 - just type VHS to DVD into the search box. I'm thinking of doing this for the 30-odd Disney VHS movies sitting on the shelf, probably never to see the light of day again and for which I paid around $20 or 30 each when they were first released 20 ...

Hi Noona, Wasn't sure if we're allowed to name or not but hoped the Rosebery NSW would be a giveaway. The company is Livingstone International. The prices and range are usually good and quality not too bad provided you don't go for the cheaper range items. I use their rimmed test tubes and have no c...

Hi everyone, I am having problems with a supplier - who shall remain nameless - but operates from the Rosebery NSW area. Numerous phone calls, wrong information, no information, and after 2 weeks, still haven't moved in any direction! Up till now, I've regarded them as an ok supplier but will probab...

You can also try the following website: http://www.archeryshop.com.au/ - click on 'string' in the left hand side menu and check out the Brownell nylon serving thread. My husband uses it when making new strings for his bows and I've bought it for school use in the past. It's very thin, very strong an...

Re: Molarity of Acetic Acid HELP

If you are given that the volume required to make up a litre of 1 mol L-1 solution is 58mL, multiplying this figure by the concentration required (0.085) will give you the amount required to make up 1 litre of 0.085 mol L-1 solution, in this case 4.93mL. No further calculation is required if you wan...

Re: Teacher declarations

I have read the comments here and am a little concerned at some schools' expectations. Putting together an induction/orientation package for new teaching staff is a job for the Education Department, School hierarchy, OH & S committee and HOD. I do not think it is a part of our duties, nor are we...

Re: Can anyone be forced to work in Science?

Here we go again with yet another example of how undervalued we are by some teaching staff!! The attitude and lack of understanding of our role – especially the OH&S side regarding chemicals, is usually attributed to non-science teaching staff who believe we’re just glorified â€...
