Smoke Alarms
Hi all, Today we lit 10 matches and burned some magnesium before the campus manager came and asked us what we were doing that had set off the pre alarm on the smoke detectors. We have had a lot of trouble lately with setting them off by producing the smallest amount of smoke. The campus manager said...

Re: Disposing of broken mercury thermometers
Steps to clean up a spill Tip: Mercury can move a long way on a smooth flat surface and shatter into tiny balls - check the entire room carefully. Use a piece of paper or light cardboard to collect larger blobs and put these on a wet paper towel then put this into a sealed container. Use an eyedropp...

Re: Disposing of broken mercury thermometers
Domestic waste to me means "bin it". It goes against my natural instinct but its on a government website so I assume it's right?
Then again… who knows if the government knows anything about how to look after the environment. But thats a whole can of worms I don't want to open!

Disposing of broken mercury thermometers
Another question that seems silly but is important to get right! I inherited 2 broken mercury thermometers. They are in sealed bags with mercury decontaminant/sulfur but I would prefer that they get disposed of rather than living in my chem store. I assume I can't just throw them away. What is the b...

Re: Evolution of Australian Biota
Our biology teacher tends to get different types of leaves from various gardens etc so that the students can see them plants. We are also quite close to centennial park so the biology class take a walk down there. I think they have a program that they run. I also think the botanical gardens have a p...

Broken Glassware
Good morning labbies, Cannot believe it is week 5 already! Almost half way to the next holidays! Last week I had a discussion with one of the science teachers about how to dispose of broken glass. While she seemed to think it was the cleaners who should clean it up I reassured her that it was infact...

Voltametre troubles
I know this probably seems like a really silly question but when I use my voltameter I cant seem to collect enough hydrogen to make a "pop". As you can understand the students are very disappointed :( Am I doing something really stupid? The hoffmans voltameter is literally brand new!

Thanks. Unfortunately we dont have a metal work dept. I see I can get them from Serrata though. I just find Serrata tend to be slow at times. Especially this time of year.

Iron Filings
Hi all I need some iron filings as our supply is getting quite low. But I have checked with SSA and westlab and they are only selling the fine filings which are more like a powder than filings and this isn't what I am after. Does anyone have any suggesting about where I can get them? Thanks Sarah :g...

Case- Thinking science
Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone else there runs the "Thinking Science" program. Its a neat program that runs through years 7 and 8 but there are a few lessons I am having trouble with and would love to have someone to consult? If not, does anybody have or know where to get/ how to m...

Re: Rock supplies
I just got approval to order a new class set from Serrata. Glad you think they are ok to use! The teachers wanted me to organise the ones we had in a 'more logical' order but this was going to be a frustrating task given we dont have all the rocks they wanted. So I thought new rocks was the best sol...

Re: Spectrometer
Hi,
I have an IEC Spectometer and I know this may sound ridiculous but I cant seem to get the atomiser out to put the solution in it. Anyone have any experience with these to give me a hint or 2?
