Re: New CSIS is finally here.

In 3.2.3.2 of the new CSIS document has a table where guidance on separation and segregation requirements for chemical classification types state that some chemical groups have to be 3 and 5 metre apart or stored in a separate store.

Re: Wooden Test tube racks

Revarnished without sanding. It's a big job to sand the whole rack back to bare wood. Haven't had a single one peel back or the varnish bubble.

This is from CSIS Class 2.1 - Flammable gases ●300 kg of LP gas when connected for use (e.g. to a stove or heater). The licence for LPG tanks on DET school sites is part of the maintenance contract administered by Properties Directorate. ●150 kg of LPG not connected for use (reserve cylinders, reser...

Re: CSIS training

With the previous CSIS it only had to be completed once and catch up with new staff. The new one seems to have to be done every 5 years.

The Chemical Safety in Schools package has the quantities that are allowed to be stored on school premises. This includes the maximum quantities per school block.

Re: year 12 ester prac

I have used salicylic acid before and have used it as a solid.
Add 5g salicylic acid to 25mL Methanol in a dry 50mL round bottom flask. Add boiling chips and reflux for 90 minutes.
I haven't used decanoic acid before.

Re: Chemical Suppliers

I bought copper sulfate powder and when students dissolved in water and crystallised the solution many of the crystals were green. When I contacted them they advised they buy in bulk, make a huge pile to mix it up then bottle it themselves. Hence, some copper chloride might be present. I don't buy c...

Use sodium carbonate to precipitate out the Cu and Mg, decant the solution and bring to neutral and pour down the sink. Then wrap up the solids and dispose of in the rubbish.

Re: Another unknown item

It might be a Ruben's tube.
Gas goes in one end, you cover the open end with a balloon membrane and play music (as in a radio or mobile phone) against the membrane. When you light it the flames jump to the beat of the bass notes.

Re: Light gates

Vernier has a Sound Level Sensor that is a simple, easily-operated sensor to measure and investigate sound levels in classroom environments but it is not a gate. You can purchase a 'Noise Gate' but I don't think it is used with Data Loggers.

Re: Measuring Cylinders

I purchased the blue based ones. If they fall over and the sleeve plastic is not right at the top the measuring cylinder breaks fairly readily. They are not strong glass and I wouldn't buy them again.

My last Haines order came in 2 weeks. The only time they were late before this was when there were items on back order.
