Re: Spectrum discharge tubes

I am not sure what a spectrum discharge tube is. We got our cross vacuum scale going, such a beautiful piece of equipment, took years of nagging the mad physics teacher though. Then I did a PD day here and he demo'd it and explained how to get it to work. Manufactured by Kagaku Kyoeisha Ltd requires...

Re: Westlab Lab Trolley Frenzy - Buy 2, get 3rd free

While I get most of my science requirements from Westlab, and I really like their service, products and after sale service, I shopped around for trolleys and got the same thing from an industrial kitchen supplier. Nisbets 3 tier black and silver heavy duty the same look as Westlab's, for 3 I got a d...

Re: Best M.W. information

I usually go off the container label, but I did download "Preparation of Solutions The Easy Reference" by S Rowley off chemtalk a while back. I use it to train new labbies or teachers. I also use The Laboratory but it has quite a few errors in it, if you can source "A Handbook of Laboratory Solution...

Re: Microbiology

Firstly we are in stage 3 where I am so no plates atm. I ALWAYS pretend we have grown the plague and act accordingly. A microbiologist came in to talk to our students once and told me human viruses need blood agar to grow. Most of our growths are mould, bacteria, and fungi.

I have gone with riskassess and I just search through Westlabs site or science supply or just google for SDS's. I gave up on chemwatch.

Re: Congo red indicator

Or collect any waste for disposal. Lots of dyes are carcinogens, depends on quantities. Blue food dye in smarties used to be a known carcinogen. But you'd have to eat a truck load to be impacted. However if you have a good substitute go with that and see if another school wants yours. I ALWAYS regre...

Re: End User Declaration

Interesting. Hope we can be kept up to date with these regulations. What sort of chemicals? I have never seen an EUD request. Back in the day we had to have a poisons certificate (in Victoria). As a school and given the non-commercial quantities ordered I understood we were exempt from many regulati...

I use an oven bag to sterilize the agar plates. they smell a bit like vegemite on a good day, and dreadful on a bad day.

Great ideas, thank you. Kimmy I never thought to add a base to the phenolphthalein gel.

Re: Melting Phenolphthalein Agar

Good to know. What strength Phenolphthalein did you use and how much? I find it's so hard to get the right colour so it doesn't fade. usually make it too pink.

Re: Risk Assessment for Lab techs

Riskassess for me too, when I'm training someone, work placement etc, I do a RA for the labbie. I think we are supposed to in Victoria, but I find Riskassess is good enough, I add notes if the teacher has to prepare anything.

Re: Hoffman"s Apparatus

It is blitzing! It is the green stoppers with fat carbon electrodes and 5% NaCl on 8 Volt DC. We are yet to test the gases and we are unsure if the NaCl is too strong and we have Cl, instead of H2 and O2. You need only very dilute NaCl soln.

Re: WELCOME BACK EVERYONE

Hi Everyone, welcome back, spread the word regarding chemtalk as I know some people haven't refound it yet. I have 1 super organised newish (2nd Year) teacher, 2 new ones, a retired one who is back here temporarily and my favourite back in science and the mad physics teacher as well as my usual love...
