Re: Length of work day

Wow. So they pay for relief for teachers to make up ratios? Our schools love support staff going on excursion as it saves them money. Teachers have to be replaced but support staff just have to catch up on their work. I really enjoy going out on excursions, it allows you to get to know both the teac...

Re: Length of work day

Seems very pedantic of the Principal. I would hate to have to account for every second of my day. Sometimes I work late, sometimes leave early. No one cares as long as my work is done, in fact my HOD encourages it. What happens if you go on excursion and miss your breaks? Does that mean you can leav...

Re: School Uniforms

We have class sets in each lab, so for me, that's 90, the high school has 120. The more you purchase the cheaper you get them so we get ours at around $18 each. The high school campus has xs through to XXL, the bulk being s,m,l. I have the same in senior secondary with my bulk being M, L , XL and up...

Re: School Uniforms

So if no lab coats, I am assuming you don't use any caustic, flammable or any dangerous class chemicals for that matter? Dissections? Stains? Maybe you have ultra clean kids lol We would have parents storming the school if kids spilt stains on their uniforms.

Re: School Uniforms

I wouldn't let anybody do any pracs in my chem and bio labs without lab coats regardless of temperature, especially in senior secondary (where I am based) It is an accident waiting to happen, sorry.

Re: School Uniforms

Yes, a lot of schools here are using synthetic polo tops and track pants. However, no one should be using bunsens or chemicals without safety gear anyway (lab coat, glasses) so it shouldn't matter what they wear underneath, as long as they have appropriate footwear.

Re: Foods prac - protein

Could work. It has sodium listed on its nutritional panel so it could have salt. Might have to test it out.

Foods prac - protein

I need to doctor up some "unknowns" for the food test prac. Basically 5 liquids that contain three out of four of protein, sugar, salt and starch. What can I use for the protein? Nutritional protein powder all have some level of carbs in them.

I hope you have sorted this out by now but as a comparison (non DET, independant Tassie school) 1. 1300 (k-12) 2.16 (7-10) 3. 21 (11-12) 4.No although I could ask for a gap year student (we have overseas gap year students for 6 months at a time) 5.yes, one day a week I do whole organisation chemical...

Re: Year 12 Biology Depth Studies

We don't have that component in our yr 12 bio but we are also an IB school so have IA's (individual in-depth investigations!!) for each IB subject! Lots of non agar stuff done. One of the easiest one numbers wise would be yeast respiration. Variables can be types of yeast. types of sugar, or tempera...

Re: Chem store vents

Fume cupboards need to be checked every 6 months under the Australian Standard. Personally for schools I think this is an overkill and 12 months would be fine, but 6 months is what the standard says.

Quite concerning. I have quarantined ours until our Compliance Officer decides what he wants us to do.

Re: Number of Prac/Experiemts Daily.

Our school is about 1100 students k-12. We have 2 campuses, 8 labs and 15 science teachers and i just worked out that we have average 33 pracs a week this last year. I work yr 11/12 campus and the absolute maximum pracs I could have a day would be 20. I never get this, I probably average 3-5 per day...

How is throwing them any different to randomly placing them on the ground? Weird teacher.
We have rigid metal ones but they are the pits for field work so we had some collapsable ones (PVC pipe with elbow joints) "made"

Re: Safety Shower testing

Ours are tested but we have only had the proper fancy (read compliant) ones since late 2016. Mine are properly plumbed in with floor drain however our high school one is not. At 75L/min flow rate....that's a LOT of water to clean up!
