Re: Acids on carbonates

I reckon we are in a snail drought here. I catch them to feed the blue tongues and shingle back lizards at school (they LOOOVE them!) but I have cleaned up all the snails at school and home, so now they are just getting lizard food from the pet shop. I wish it would rain again!!

Re: unknown name prac

We've got a similar one called "the spread of HIV". Phenolphthalein is the indicator and we use 0.1M Na2CO3 instead of NaOH.

Re: Magnets

Have you tried Aussie Magnets? Their website is
http://aussiemagnets.com.au/
They have a huge range of magnets that can be ordered. I got some there a couple of months ago and they were very good. I got ferrite rings and a neodymium one as well

Re: Animals in schools

We have tropical fish, goldfish, two blue tongue lizards and one shingle backed lizard. We used to have stick insects, green tree frogs, a yabby and a cockatiel but I didn't replace them as they died. They were too hard to house over holidays, as it is I take the lizards and the fish home over Chris...

Re: Resazurin

We do the traffic light demo here. The method is, add 3g glucose to 250mL distilled water and stir until dissolved, then add 5g NaOH pellets to the mixture. The method says to add 5-10mL 1% indigo carmine but I just add a little bit of powder (not much, just enough to colour the solution yellow). Th...

Re: Welcome back 2015

I stayed home! But it was good to do that after a busy 2014, just having a break was what I needed. We came back last Friday (teachers today, kids this Friday) so I am back in work mode now

I didn't even think of neurological conditions as being something you don't talk about! I had/have one too, not depression but I needed brain surgery to get the infected part out as I had bacterial meningitis, and as far as I'm concerned it's just another form of surgery, there shouldn't be a stigma...

Re: Slime

PVA glue is polyvinyl acetate and using this makes silly putty, not slime. PVA for slime is polyvinyl alcohol. We use 20mL 5% PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) solution, some food dye to colour it and glitter if you want it. Then add 5mL 4% borax and mix, then put the result in a ziploc bag. I've got another ...

Re: Man Dingo Experiment

If this is the carbon pillar I do it too as a demo for year 12 chem students, in a fume cupboard. I use 75mL conc. sulphuric, and 100g sugar moistened with 20mL water, all in a 250mL measuring cylinder instead of a beaker. I use the method I think was in Heinemann (I'll find out where it was, I only...

Re: SAVE THE DATES: 27th & 28th November 2014

I've only just seen this, and correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that in NSW RAs for each school are not needed as they are covered by DET. They are in Victorian schools in the DEECD system and also in private schools. There must be different legislation for each state. The teachers are responsibl...

Re: Fire extinguishers

My other half is the FEM (fire equipment maintenance) officer for the local CFA and he has to check the fire extinguishers in shops etc every six months. He is very busy as he has another job because he is a volunteer for the CFA. It is still very serious though, he gets a lot of training to be FEM ...

Hmmm, any jobs going there? :wink2: I am in Victoria, after all, although it's probably too far to drive from Geelong every day! Guess I'll have to stick with my 70's-style building, lovely brownish-grey brickwork everywhere, delightful painted benches, desks used as work areas, the list goes on.......

To amandag, I am really jealous of your science area - it's even better than the new labs I worked in at CSIRO in a previous life! Although I have to agree with ocker that it's not the labs but those who work in it who make the learning of science important, but imagine what all of the fabulous lab ...
