It depends what kind of microtome you have and what you want to cut. But if it is a handheld one and you are cutting something like plant stems you do not need oil.

What about meal worms and light? They are light senitive. Put them in a shoe box with a light at one end. The pet shops sell them for food for other animals so easy to get hold of.
