Re: spikk kits

I've also got citric acid for alkali spills and have recently added a spray bottle with water to damp down anything that could create dust. That was after a sodium hydroxide bottle leaked over the holidays. It had dried out and the residue had formed a very fine dust that started to float up when I ...

Re: Fixing slinkies?

I've heard you can fix over stretched kinked ones by wiring them up and putting them into a hot fire, but I've never tried it.

Re: What the ....!!!!????????

Not to be eaten or tasted. May be contaminated. Experiments involving tasting or eating are not allowed in laboratories. This is a copy of some small labels I made and printed out on bright coloured paper and stuck to the food items in the department. Depending on the current crop of teachers I put ...

Does anyone have a good poster or set of instructions about how to use an eye wash?

Re: Water bath

I just set up a tank I think the temperature range you could set it to was 18-30.
You can get heater thermastat combinations for aquariums made of metal now which might last a bit longer than the glass ones.

Re: Phenolphthalein Agar

We have always cooked up agar and phenolphthalien, then the cubes are put in a dilute sodium hydroxide solution to turn pink.
Very easy, never had any complaints.

Re: Annual Chemical Stock Take

I leave a copy at the office with other stuff given to the fire department if they come so they know what they're dealing with.

Re: making solutions

I think it depends on your water quality.
I work at two schools, at one I use tap water and have no problems.
At the other I get all sort of interesting precpitates if I use tap water,
which is bore water, so I have to use ditilled water.

Re: marking glassware

I haven't tried marking glass but I colour-coded all the labels on trays of equipment -a different colour for each lab and prep room.
Of course it doesn't mean things are always put away but anything out of place stands out.

Re: plaster of Paris

It has to be used carefully as it can cause burns. Google "plaster of paris burns" for some scary stories.
