Re: Microbiology

Firstly we are in stage 3 where I am so no plates atm. I ALWAYS pretend we have grown the plague and act accordingly. A microbiologist came in to talk to our students once and told me human viruses need blood agar to grow. Most of our growths are mould, bacteria, and fungi. Viruses need living cell...

Re: Gel electrophoresis

I've used a set up similar to this one. I can't find the actual link. http://www.exo.net/~jyu/activities/gel%20electro.pdf Instead of wires I used stainless steel electrodes mounted on their sides. (Horizontally) . I used two power packs connected in series (to give 24v) otherwise it took a while to...

Re: GHS

Thanks, that's what I thought.
However I just found out that I probably won't be kept on at this school next year, :-(
So that will be someone else's job. (Or not)

Re: GHS

My understanding was it was only stock chemicals bought from a supplier before GHS that did not need relabelling, and that all made up solutions, and decanted chemicals had to be relabell...

Re: Practical record keeping

I tried backing up riskassess onto discs, but apparently the discs don't like it if you try to back up onto the same disc multiple times. gave up on that. Some of our teachers use risk assess, others don't. You can lead a horse to water... :banghead:

Re: New safety directions with dissection gear

I don't see the point of disinfecting it BEFORE it goes out. When it comes back, I remove the blades from the scalpels, and put everything through the dishwasher. 80 degrees for an hour. Then replace scalpel blades with new sterile ones. I used to wash everything by hand, and then soak it in alcohol...
