Re: labeling old chemicals in store
Definitely not to cover up old chemical name with new label. One school I worked at someone had put a new label on top of the old label. I was not convinced that what was in the bottle was what was on the new label .... it turned out . ..it was NOT the substance of the new label Definitely not to co...

Re: Where to buy talc in rock form
Hi Rae I believe the Wingecarribee Council tipped a truckload of asbestos containing waste onto a road as road filling in Robertson few years ago now and we are worried about a few samples of talc that may contain asbestos. But I am not saying that we should just throw it in the bin - it will cost $...

Re: labeling old chemicals in store
I think the conference presenter meant that the old labels were the old "dangerous goods diamonds" . They should be covered up with the new "diamonds"
He was not talking about actual chemical name label

Re: labeling old chemicals in store
The new labels should not be stuck over the top of the old labels - put them on the back of the bottle or stick on with contact, which can be peeled back to check the label if necessary.

Re: finding 2M sulfuric acid on Chemwatch
thank you to all of you
after I vented my frustration on Chemtalk up it came - just like that on Chemwatch. Yes the Chat line help said that Firefox was better than Chrome which I use on the Mac because Chrome seems to cut off the quick drop down box on the LHS. But yes it is very time consuming.

finding 2M sulfuric acid on Chemwatch
Hello All I can not find 2M sulfuric acid in Chemwatch for a label. There are about 40 pages. In the list is 0.1M lactic acid 2M acetic acid formic acid - I gave up about page 7. I have tried every conceivable way of entering the name such as 2M sulfuric acid, sulfuric acid 2M, SULFURIC ACID etc. Th...

1M NaOH label in Chemwatch
Hello Everyone Just venting my frustration with Chemwatch labels. the labels, '14 to a page' for 1M NaOH has the formula NAOH - this is obviously a formatting error and should have been corrected - I do not think this is good enough Chemwatch. Also there appears quite a lot of different formats for ...

Hi Macca
we use the large boiling tubes. A rubber delivery tube (rubber stopper with hole through which is a short glass tube. The glass tube is fitted with a rubber tube about 35 cm long). The bent glass tubes get broken too easily and the larger boiling tube allows for a bigger volume of CO2.

Re: CSIS training for new and long-term staff
Hi Labbie
Is this only for DEC schools? I went to a day in Jan 17 this year held for anyone to attend at the Dooleys Club in Lidcombe put on by the Catholic sector.
I really wish we were ''all on the same page with this' chemical labelling.

Re: what is the pay scale of a labbie
Thanks Sunray for your comment. You certainly are paid well. On qualifications - I really don't think having a degree (Science teaching) without experience in industry qualifies you! Most of the teachers ask me how to do everything. I have the old Chemistry Cert plus many years in industry. I had no...

what is the pay scale of a labbie
Hi All Just wondering what rate per hour everyone gets. I am on $27 per hour for a 56 hour fortnight. I am told that I am paid very well. They have changed my contract - my salary is now unaveraged. Which means I am not paid in the holidays and when students are not at school. They are cutting me ba...

Re: Setting up yet another prep room
Hi Labbie
I feel your pain. I think most of us in Labbie land go beyond the call of duty - the SAMs don't understand - so I got out of the Public System.
I think it is all too much some times. Not really much better in the Private System - they tell me I am paid too much!

no corrosive diamond on Calcium hydroxide
Hi All We have just received a new batch of calcium hydroxide from Chem Supply to make up Limewater. It is a hazardous chemical (stated on its label) and also a dangerous good stated in the SDS. The SDS says it is corrosive but the bottle does not have a corrosive diamond on the label Why is this? A...

So its 'the blind leading the blind' . So much for qualifications. You go to he PD days on labelling and teach the others. Most don't know what chemicals are what. " Just don't touch the Sodium!" " Whats sodium I hear them ask.

Re: chemwatch labels
I like the bit on the Chemwatch labels that says "keep in original container" try putting that label on a dropper bottle! Really ..... the Chemwatch labels for school use are not as good as the old CSIS labels. And it seems each labbie is processing their own label using Dgen . I think it ...

Re: PSA meetings?
Hi Lada are you in a DET school? This is all very worrying, especially for us Lab Techs who have qualifications - as we obviously like lab work enough to study for it. I have worked in DET schools where many of the SAOs did not know how to type, let alone turn on a computer. I suppose the ratio of l...
