Hi All,
Would like to know of any great pracs you may have used using TLC plates for senior chem class. I have the information of the amino acid kit from Southern BIO but would like a variety of ideas.

Re: How do I describe what I do?
This has been a very interesting read and concerning too for those who have had to learn on the job and thrown in the deep end. When I moved to Canberra, I was snatched up quickly as I carry a Dip in Chemistry and work for years in industrial type labs. I've meet some amazing Lab Tech's here in the ...

Re: Gas Chromatography
This is introduced and used at TAFE or UNI, they only need to learn the basics behind the technique in senior chemistry. You would need to be familiar with them and know how to maintain them and calibrate every morning before use. That was what I had to do at TAFE and my old job at Pacific Power

It's demo ONLY and we use small amounts. Done outside and clean up with lots of water and bi carb soda before wrapping up in newspaper and bin it.
Some teachers try to do big but it's not best with the fumes.

Re: Notice for experiments?
24 hours notice is the latest here, most give me 3 days or 48 hours notice. My Senior Chem teacher gives me a week notice for all he's pracs, I love it They do a lot of team Teaching here and I find that it helps with the time management in planning and giving me the notice I need to get things done ...

Re: Turn around time for Equipment orders?
Haines for me is really good and I have a quick turn around but Serrata is slow. I'm still waiting for things on back order from them,I've had to call them asking for a date the product will be arriving and then annoy them once that date has past. Takes up too much time that's needed to do my work i...

Re: Has any one got two labbies?
I'm on my own with 800 students and I only do science, but at my old school we had 1260 students with two of us lab techs everyday. Otherwise the work doesn't get done , pracs don't get out and it's amazing how loud the Science Teachers yell when this starts happening. It worked in my favor.

Re: GHS
No extra time was given and has taken 1.5 years to get most of it done with two of us , 2 days a week. Any spare minute was used to get it done and now I'm almost there, it's just little things that we find that is left to do.

Re: Thermite Reaction
I do this as a Demo for the Teachers and we do it for the year 8 classes only twice a year with them all outside to watch and I carefully set it up of. My HOD will only allow me to do it with my qualifications and experience in the different Labs that I have worked in before working in a school. If ...

I've put fun pictures of the periodic table around and made words with the periodic table for the students to read. I'll have to take some pics and post it on here to show what I have done over the years to make it fun and interesting.

Re: URGENT request for help!
We too have 1200 students and 13 Science Teachers but they ALL MUST fill out their RA and if the prac is simple they can order 3 lessons before but they must check with me first to make sure it's not crazy that day but in general it's the day before and as for more complex ones they see me while boo...

Re: Hot plate
Here we leave the hot plates in the lab to cool down and I go in later to collect them. All the Teachers know this and if they walk in to find hot plates left on the benches , I know why. They often send students in with them once they have cooled down for me
