We bought these earlier this year. A teacher used them for the first time last week and said they were really good and sturdy. Who know how long they will last but I plan on getting some more later in the year. Wish I'd bought the set of 12.

Berlese/Tullgren funnel
Our Biol teacher is thinking about doing this next year for the student lead prac. While individually they don’t look too hard to set up, we will be talking about large numbers. He is thinking that each group can collect leaf litter from different areas (the modification) so will need 3 per group fo...

Re: Back Titration Ideas
We do "Determining the purity of a sample of calcium carbonate". You put the accurately weighed carbonate in excess HCl then titrate the remaining HCl with NaOH. I can try and scan it for you if you want.

Re: Phenolphthalein Agar
I usually use 25g per L but just because it gives a firmer agar, not because it didn't set. I do also use powdered phenolphthalein as it seems to give a better colour. I do 1g per litre. It sounds like you did everything else right though. I make sure it boils but not for a particular amount of time...

Re: Physiology pracs please
Just the standard breathing into bromothymol blue before & after running around, & adding ammonia dropwise to bring the colour back. Heart rate is taking pulse before & after running around, & we also do breath holding timed before & after running around. They cover the bases to...

Yes, that’s what I have and was going to get more of. Sounds like not the way to go then. Thanks for that, I’ll have a look at Haines.

Re: rheostats/potentiometers
They go as low as 500 ohms so should I get those then? The lower the better?

Re: rheostats/potentiometers
A teacher has asked me for variable resistors for a year 8 class on circuits. We have slide rheostats, resistor sets (with 7 different resistors in them) and potentiometers. All seem to work within a simple battery bulb circuit but only at one end of the range and go from on to off very quickly. The...

Re: Iron II Sulfate
I bought ammonium ferrous sulfate to use in our cation identification prac and have just made a 0.1M solution. After making it I realised that I hadn't checked how to make it and that maybe it needed sulfuric acid in it like ferrous sulfate does. According to "The Laboratory" it doesn't th...

Re: Welcome back everyone to chemtalk
Very happy to have Chemtalk back. The only problem is that I can't access it at work anymore. It comes up as a message board/forum. I am currently on my phone! I'll have to see if I can get it unblocked.

pdf was too large a file so i took a screen shot and put it in a word file. You could probably do a better job anyway but gives the idea.

Re: Christmas themed prac's for yr6 visits
We had a good one making Xmas angels by doing chromatography on coffee filters. That makes the skirt of the angel and then there was a template for the top of the angel that they coloured in and stapled onto the skirt. The problem is i found it very difficult to find white coffee filters as they all...

Re: Aprons or Lab coats
we have lab coats for senior classes and aprons for middle years (6-9). Some of our year 10 classes happen in MY labs so those classes have to put up with aprons. The aprons we have are wipe-able (vinyl coated fabric from "Australian Apron Makers"). I like having those kind of aprons as i ...

Re: Chemwatch have done it again
Lorikeet, do you have a location on there? I really like the idea but wasn't sure if you needed to have locations in the manifest too. This can be multiple places as we have a senior prep room and a middle years prep room plus bulk chemicals and class sets in different places.

I'm in Catholic system we are using RiskAssess and had an external W. H. & S audit over the Christmas break. The science Chemical manifest has to have the date of each chemical risk assessment included on it. I have printed out a risk assessment for each chemical from the risk assessment progra...

Potassium dichromate solution wine titrations
How does everyone feel about using potassium dichromate solution? We use it for 12chem wine titrations. In the past I haven't been too worried, as long as the students had been warned that it is nasty, as I figure they only use it for a short period of time during wine EEI's and then never use it ag...

Alginate worms/polymers
I have been having a play using Gaviscon instead of sodium alginate to make alginate worms. It seems to work really well but I am having an issue. In both of the pracs I have it says to make a saturated solution of NaCl and that when you drop the alginate worms into it they will dissolve. Mine donâ€...
