Re: human pathogens in agar plates

I agree Macca, there's one that gets the students to light a bunsen burner and then tilt it to burn a substance (flame test from memory)! I instantly banned it, who gets students to handle a lit bunsen burner???? when much safer and proven methods are available.

Re: spirit burners

I have quite a lot of pre-labelled spirit burners, multiples of some eg ethanol. After use I filter the remainder into appropriately labelled bottles which are stored in the flammable cupboard for next time. What little residue is left in the spirit burners is allowed to evaporate in the fume cupboa...

Re: Penolphthalein Agar Prac

The only thing is if they do it in year 8, its not new in yr 11, plus if all of year 8 do it that would be an extra cost, is it necessary? Just my thoughts. MariaC

Re: Is this experiment banned?

We do it as a demo, student use would depend on the colour code dot for the sulfuric acid concentration used, greater than 10M teacher only, 4M to less than 10M year 11-12 so according to CSIS at that molarity ok but Id say at teachers discretion, they know their students.....and definately in a fum...

Re: chemical Register

My understanding is also that if it is not hazardous and used for purpose it was manufactured for eg washing up for dishwashing liquid it does not need a sds or to be listed, but if it is used for purpose other than original purpose eg PVA glue to make slime it does need to be listed and have a sds....

Re: registration

I agree with superbug, they are still stored under the older dangerous goods system. The new labels are for when the chemicals are actually in use. I attended the AIS Chemical Safety in Schools last week, and this issue had been one of my questions. Phillip Crisp (risk assess) gave the talk, and he ...

Re: Voltametre troubles

We use a squirt ( very scientific) of 6M, but add it to the distilled water and stir BEFORE you add to voltameter! I was adding it to the receptacle area, and it wasn't producing any bubbles, but if mixed thoroughly in the water no problems!

:banghead2: Hi Guys, I did a practice run yesterday, got great froth and desired results at differing temp, pH and concentration of hydrogen peroxide but went to fine tune today and so much less froth, so does this mean the capsicum extract is a use on the day scenario? cos its for period 1, of cour...
