Re: Taking Mercury to the class room

I have about the same amount here at my school. I have it in a see through plastic bottle, but then placed in a metal beaker. Incase the bottom comes way. If the teachers use it to show meniscus they place a layer of water on it to stop fumes and use it in fume hood. My teachers keep it in metal bea...

Re: Potassium Permanganate crystals

I had the same problem. So I made up a small amount of saturated solution and then poured it into old petri dishes and allowed crystals to form. Takes a day or two to dry and crystals to form but it works. Just store them in a speciman jar and use them only for convection prac.

Thanks, they are stored in a microscope slide box. Out of direct light when not in use. But they are probably so old.
Thanks for the replys. Trish

Slides - Fading

Hi everyone, Do prepared slides fade over time? Or are they meant to last? I am in the process of ordering new slides as our collection are yellow and some are faded so bad you can't even tell if anything is on the slide. Was just wondering so I don't purchase too many of a slide then have to replac...

Re: IB prac

We do a prac in yr 10 using BRIX meters for ripening fruit. Not sure if this will help.
Brix meters show the sugar content in fruit. The more ripe the higher the sugar content. Farmers use these to check the optimum time to pick fruit.

Re: URGENT request for help!

I would be keeping a diary, asking for "Quotes" or instructions to be written or emailed to you. Keep a paper trail.. As it sounds border line Bullying. Also for your own sanity remember you are a lab assistant, to me an assistant should be told on a daily basis what to do. As you are assi...

Re: Thin Layer Chromatography

we make it ourselves and use it on a glass slide. Procedure: Weigh out 1g Silica and 4g Plaster of paris, put in mortar and pestle and grind thoroughly - finer the better. thoroughly clean a glass slide and place on a piece of paper towel. transfer ground up powder to a beaker and add 10ml of water....

Re: Practical record keeping

Hi Labbie,
Can you please tell me where to find documentation that tells us this?
I looked on DEC intranet and can't find anything that says we are to keep for 70-90 years.
Only office for 7 years.
Any direction would be greatful so I can take to HOD.

Re: Find a GHS labeled product challenge

Hi Linotas,
It is not illegal yet to accept products not labeled with GHS. This will come into effect Jan 2017. Manufacturers in NSW can still sell products without a GHS label until this date. But come January It is then illegal.
So don't know if you could send them back....

Re: Another GHS question...

Hi, Merilyn, I rang them and discussed the issue with a lovely lady from safe work NSW and she told me that I don't have to relabel any stock chemicals purchased before jan2017. Because I have dated all the chemical bottles to prove they were purchased before Jan 2017. I asked for written evidence a...

Re: Another GHS question...

Type in www.safework.nsw.gov.au
Type in 'GHS what you need to know factsheet' in the search bar
on page 4 it says existing chemicals that you intend to keep past 31/12/2016 do not need to be relabelled.
This in for NSW.
So I am only relabeling dropper bottles and decanted bottles.

Re: How do you store ...

I store my thermometers standing upright. I was told that you should not store them lying down, it's not good for them. My lenses are stored in a drawer which has a thick piece of polystyrene that has slits carved out of it to hold each lense, so they don't touch each other or move when drawer is ca...

Agar Plates pricing for students

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone charges students for agar plates? For when they have to do an individual research project, not for normal class/teacher lesson. This year I have had a few kids requesting these and with budget cuts just was wondering if other schools issue a fee for plates. And ...
